We have a lot of Mexican people moving into my area and I am sort of in awe of people who are brave enough to leave the familar to start life anew so I am not against them in any way. Heck, my family came over from Germany.

Anyway, here is the thing. Someone has started a Mexican grocery here and they named it "Alamo". Am I the only one who thinks that might not be the very best name for it? Maybe not many people know the history anymore. Just wondering.

Half the businesses in San Antonio have Alamo in their name. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Remember, Santa Anna was a ruthless dictator-not very popular with the masses. The Texicans had many Tejano allies in the Battle of Bexar (where General Cos' was soundly whipped) just preceding the Battle of the Alamo.

1. I'm a native Texan. We take our Alamo seriously!

2. I visit the Alamo at least twice a year & I've read every book I know of regarding the battle.

2. I'm a certified History teacher (although I currently teach music).

JimmieJ, I am a student of history and paid great attention to my history teacher way back when so I know the story of Jim Bowie and Davy, Davy Crockett and what transpired there but was afraid that many, around here, might not. And even if they did it still might set well with them.

Glad to know that there are many great teachers around to keep our kids informed and ready for the future. I do my part by teaching them how to read.

Have a margarita on Riverwalk for me one of these fine days. I greatly enjoyed visiting San Antonio a few years back even if my wicked bil would not take me to the Alamo. Some people see ruins while others see history.

1. You're preaching to the choir! ;)

2. It is amazing, isn't it? I wish people wouldn't put so much grafitti on the walls. :(

3. I'm glad you're not certified in math because you put two number twos! :teeth:

Oh, that's sad. :guilty: We used to live in San Antonio, and loved going to the Riverwalk. I never noticed any grafitti on the Alamo, is this a new thing?

I know the Alamo doesn't have a basement. :teeth:

It seemed, to me, like people were scratching things in the walls. :(

I want Alamo Cafe!!

When we went my bil was stationed at the AF base and as an officer he insisted on paying for everything wherever we went. Finally I put my foot down and he promised that I could pick up the next tab. He took us somewhere (San Francisco something??) which was touted as a very fancy restaurant. Lot of red velvet and waitress in short skirts and a gal on a trapeeze who swung back and forth between cowbells and kicked them in turn. The food was so so, the waitress were so old that they had wrinkles in their hose and they were not wearing any and the bill was more than a month's food budget. My bil got me good!!!

People who cannot accomplish anything delight in tearing down what others have done. It is sad.

As the OP I am glad to know that I apparently am wrong about the name Alamo being offensive. Guess I just thought of some of our early American heroes dying and thought others might not want to be reminded (even though I am not at all sure we should have been there in the first place) :confused3

JimmieJ, I feel your pain with the two 2's. I was an English major and I cringe at how lax I have gotten as my typing goes faster than my brain. :rotfl:

I visited the Alamo with my DH when we were there on a business trip about 5 years ago.

I remember many docents/guards inside the Alamo, keeping watch over the visitors. We were even told to keep our voices low and respectful ("inside voices"), as we were on hallowed ground.

It is sad to think that graffiti is now desecrating this place.

That may be the outside walls which are in no way original. The familiar building and barracks area are very closely guarded and no one is even allowed to lean against those walls while taking pictures. I've seen many people chastised at all times of the day and night.

We were there recently and saw no graffiti but we didn't walk behind the compound.

I've been to the Alamo tons of times and never noticed any graffiti. At least not any in the actual mission.

I won't get down there until probablly the end of Sept but if I do before then I'll look. I have a party to go to this weekend which could be down at the Riverwalk (I'm unsure of the location because DH has the invite and since it is a surprise party I haven't seen it) so if it is I'll take a look.
