A quick question about insurance.
We are covered for 500,000 in liability on a rental. Our agent wasn't sure if Alamo would require more than that to rent at Alamo.

Does anyone know? All of our other insurance is fine. This was the one area we weren't sure if there were requirements to meet. If needed I'd rather up our policy today from home than purchase anything from Alamo.
Thanks:)

You would be on the hook for liability so I don't think they care. I've never been asked for my limits or even to prove I have insurance.

Did you check Alamo's website for this information? Seems like a better idea to go to the source rather than secondhand from a poster here.

Why yes in fact I did. And while I did find the options, I was unable to find anywhere that listed if in fact a certain amount of liability was required. So I was asking the several other Alamo renters on this board if they had experience with said question.

Thanks debbie. I was really just wondering offhand if anyone had been told they needed a specific amount. I appreciate the answer:)

Considering you are covered for more than any state minimum, you will be more then fine (note: I think it's a good thing people review their insurance coverages, most are underinsured when it comes to personal liability).

Thanks. Even my agent was unsure what exactly was required in the U.S. and Florida in particular and we have never rented a car before:)

I just noticed, your in Canada, just make sure your liability carries over to the US. You'd be amazed at how low (or non existant) some state minimums are for Liability insurance. It's absolutely insane.

The rental company cannot require you to purchase any optional components or coverages unless they have written rules describing the conditions under which they may.

You decide whether $500,000 liability on cars you don't own (e.g. rentals) is enough for you and you up the coverage with your own insurance company in advance if you think it is not enough.

Do be aware that an injured party really comes after you and it is the duty of your insurance company to step in the middle and cover you up to the limits of your policy. For administrative convenience the injured party usually starts by filing the claim with your insurance company.

IMHO $500,000. liability coverage is not enough for a family with a home and a reasonable amount of assets and belongings and bank accounts.

We do not require insurance proof. Many of our renters do not even own cars. Our requirements are usually: current valid license, credit card in renters name or a debit card in a renters name with proof of round trip transportation. Additional drivers are subject to the above. Hopes this helps.

We are in Ontario Canada and any insurance for vehicles I shopped around for started the minimum liability at 1 million although I have read that $200000 is the legal minimum here. We have 2 million. I would think worse case scenario it would be pretty easy to spend $500000 in a serious crash. As for renting a vehicle in the states we so far have never had to show any proof of insurance just had to sign off on all their offered insurance. We have had a hard sell on the insurance a few times.

Interesting.. we're in Ontario too. Perhaps it's just time to up it anyway. We've been on the same policy so long with State Farm that it's probably time to review it all and see what needs changing.

Thanks for the help everyone:)

Liability covers situations where you are at fault in an accident. It would cover damage you cause to property, medical bills for those you injure and and if you are forced to pay pain and suffering, lost wages, etc.

Most state minimums are real low in the USA. Ohio I think is only $50,000 or $100,000. Not exactly sure about Florida. Even though you are not required to show evidence of insurance to Alamo, you are still required to carry the minimum coverage for where you are driving. You have that covered though.

Dio...You only need to have the minimum insurance coverage as required by your home state. In NC that would be $30,000 for bodily injury and $25,000 for property damage. In NC we have the ability to buy insurance for uninsured and underinsured drivers.

As always, it's cheaper to kill then maim. (Morbid but true.)

What does a renter do IF they don't own a car or have insurance as some states do not require you to have insurance (just post a bond).

In Ohio, I believe you can post a bond instead of carrying insurance. I believe all states require insurance or proof of a bond. If a renter does not have insurance (or a bond) and rents a car and drives it off the lot, they are breaking the law in the state where they are driving if that state requires a bond or insurance.

Of course they can pick up liability coverage through the rental car company and have the coverage they would need. So if someone who doesn't own a car rents one, they would be wise to purchase supplemental liability coverage either through the car rental agency or elsewhere.

I believe the insurance/ bond is applicable to owners, not renters. We have insurance on all cars, for the mandatory stuff.
I agree if someone does not own a car or have insurance, it is wise to purchase it.

Liability insurance covers the person driving a car. You don't have to be an owner on the car to have insurance coverage to drive. If an uninsured person is driving a car and causes an accident, they leave themselves open to lawsuit and are personally responsible for paying any damages awarded in the lawsuit. These awards can be from occupants of another car, the owner of the other car, the occpants of the other car. That is where liability insurance comes in, it covers those loses.

got ya. :) Since we don't ask IF someone has insurance, I find it hard to understand why you say a renter must have it, how would we know? I understand that without insurance the renter is taking a HUGE chance if they don't have it or purchase it, financial ruin comes to mind.
