I just checked my card statement online and Alamo have charged me £60. I have absolutely no idea why - we booked the all inclusive package through US Rent A Car so there should not have been any extra charges. Who do I need to contact to dispute this charge, Alamo or US Rent A Car?

Thanks!

I would contact usrentacar first. It sounds like it is something to do with fuel.

Try to find your receipt from when you dropped of the car - it should indicate the fuel status, as judged by the last person you dealt with at the drop off site.

We had this trouble with Dollar (we booked through Airline Network), except we were charged £692 without being told about it!

I contacted Airline Network as they were the booking agent. I would contact both companies about this amount however, as with ours I think we have been charged for the cost of the car we had already paid AN for, but yours seems like something added as an extra.

It is very annoying when it just appears on your statement - why they don't point it out when you return the car is beyond me as at least you have an opportunity to object if it is wrong.

I also contacted the credit card company, they said they would intervene as I was saying the transaction was not authorised by me but they said they would only do something if the travel agent weren't able to resolve it.

Good luck :goodvibes

I'm certainly not aware of any toll breaches, and since the charge was applied to our credit card on the exact day of return I doubt it could be this, as surely it would take a few weeks for a toll breach notification to get to them?

Thanks for your input. I will call them on Monday and find out what is going on. Like you say, I'm furious I wasn't told about this charge when we returned the car. I know it's only £60, but it's the principle of the matter. The whole point of booking with US Rent A Car was to avoid any extra fees. :sad2:

Were you late returning the car?
sometimes a few minutes past the original collection time will generate an extra days rental plus taxes

I can't remember, but we might have returned it later than we originally booked it for, BUT we also collected it (much) later than booked for (flight was very, very delayed on the way out). So we didn't go past the original collection time but might have gone past the originally booked times, if that makes sense.

Does that still count or are we okay?

This is why I ALWAYS check the receipt they hand me when I return the car. Any charges that aren't on that receipt would be reported to my credit card company as unauthorised.

We were once charged for an additional driver when we had already prepaid using the platinum/gold package. An email to them resolved it, credited quickly but with exchange rate changing I lost out by about £5.
It will probably be a fuel charge as it was day you returned. You said you did all inclusive, if you do the AI you are supposed to return empty and pay for tank of gas unless you pre-arrange to return full. If this was not arranged at collection they will charge for a tank of gas even if returned full. Did you discuss gas policy on collection?

We hired our car through Alamo in April and booked the all inclusive, all singing, all dancing insurance. DH went to pick the car up - and was fully aware that there was nothing else to pay. He was asked to sign in 3 places for them to release the car, which he did. He was ONLY asked to sign to accept the car - nothing else was mentioned - and he assumed that as everything was pre-paid for it was nothing more than that. (If you knew my DH there is NO WAY he signs for anything without checking everything in triplicate!)

On our return they had charged his card £60 - we eventually found out that one of the so called "car acceptance" signatures was actually a signature for breakdown cover!!!!!:mad:
When we raised the query with the TA and CC people and said that we regarded this as theft from us, because he had signed the paperwork there was nothing we could do.

Expensive lesson learnt on our part.

Hope you manage to get this sorted.

That's just the point, the printout showed nothing to pay! I reported it to the cc as unauthorised, but they said it wasn't technically fraud as Dollar had charged the cc details I had given them when collecting the car. Therefore, they would only get involved if all other avenues were exhausted.

If that is the case I will be filing a chargeback with my credit card company, because we confirmed with the woman at the desk explicitly that there would be "no charges" and that we did NOT require ANY other extras. She marked x's on the rental agreement in three places and asked DH to sign there; made no mention at all of any optional breakdown covers. DH didn't have his glasses so probably didn't read it properly, but if I find out she lied to us and DH did accidentally sign for the cover then I will be absolutely furious! She seemed pretty annoyed that we refused the $700 upgrade she offered us, so she probably did this trick to get some extra $$$ out of us. These car rental people are nasty pieces of work.

I asked about gas when we collected the car; the man said we could return it empty and have the fuel billed or return it full and pay for the gas ourselves.

Sorry for the delay in updating this thread.

Turns out the £60 charge was for fuel, even though we had filled the tank before returning. The nasty lady on the Alamo desk obviously LIED to us when she said we could return it full and not be charged, because US Rent-A-Car are claiming DH signed something agreeing to pay for fuel :(

So annoying to have wasted money on the last day of our trip. Lesson learnt for next time: we'll be going back to Dollar, I think.

Thought it would be that, catches a few out.
I would send an email to Alamo, with all reference numbers for them to check and tell them they have lost a customer because of their agent lieing, something you specifically asked but given wrong info. Then say in future you will book with another rental company. Nothing to lose, you might get something.
I had a similar problem with Dollar once, prepaid additional drivers(gold/platinum) but they had charged about £75 on credit card when we got home. Sent Dollar an email and got credit no problem. Even when you check what you are signing you can still miss a little thing like that after a long flight.

We also had the £75 on the c/c from dollar when we got home, however we HADN'T prepaid for an additional driver but I DID sign for it when I got there without realising!

Luckily our travel agents gave us this £75 off our next trip which was nice of them :)

That happened to us the first time we rented a car through USRentacar - they were very good, though, and arranged for the amount to be refunded to us as we had asked if it was OK to retunr the vehicle full and were told that was fine. They agreed that it hadn't been explained properly to us when we collected the car that we HAD to return the car empty. The result was that we did get the amount refunded and a 10% discount from USRentacar on a future booking. Since then, when using USRentacar we have always bought the package which includes fuel however we got caught exactly the same last time (through a different company) and had to go through the whole rigmarole of getting a refund all over again
