Hi guys,

I am on the verge of booking my rental car through Alamo on the internet which have a desk at our arrival airport - Sanford. Any last minute warnings or advice please? Their smallest car is (I think) a Chevrolet Metro. Being from the UK, I don't think I am familiar with this car. How much luggage can you fit into one of these, bearing in mind there's two adults and two children in our party (aged 8 & 10) to also squeeze into the car! Any advice greatfully received!

Many thanks.

You'll have a problem. According to the Alamo webste the car only seasts 2 adults and 2 small passengers. Your kids better be short. The trunk has room for 2 SMALL bags.

Either rent a bigger car or plan on one of the adults having the luggage their lap.:D

You might get away with a compact but I'd suggest mid-size. You'll get a better rate if you shop now than if you wait until you get there.

Chevy Metro's are really pretty small. Probably not much bigger, if any bigger, than a Mini Cooper and much less 'luxurious.' You may want to consider renting a larger car unless you travel very, very light.

Hi,

I assume coming from the UK to stay for 3 weeks you will have quite a bit of luggage.

The metro is a subcompact, little trunk space and small engine. I would not drive my family in one on the Florida interstate in Orlando.

I think you'll be much happier with a midsize or fullsize. Most of the time the rental fee is not that much higher than an compact car.

herc.

Here is the Metro coupe

The sedan is truly not that much bigger than the coupe. I don't know that I could fit 3 weeks worth of luggage, let alone myself, DH, and DS. ;)

It is one of the smallest US cars, pretty much the next step up from pedaling a bicycle. :)

Given your family size, luggage you'd require for your length of stay, and just overall comfort...I think you'd be much more happy in a full-sized car or even a Minivan. :)

Hi Guys,

All your posts have been really useful and those pictures are definitely of great help. Although the website I saw had pictures (very small pictures), it was actually very useful seeing bigger pictures!!! Are the prices likely to change (up or down) as I get nearer to my trip?).

The prices on rental cars here, expecially in Flordia, can vary wildly even daily. Your best bet is to find the best rate you can now on the car class that you need and then keep looking for a cheaper rate periodically. If you find one you can make a new reservation and then cancel the first. Good Luck.

That's so brilliant! Thank you for that bit of advice, it's so obvious really, especially considering I had been told I can cancel a reservation without any problem!

You might check and see if you need the extra insurance. Most of us are covered by our own auto polcies and/or credit card coverage but I'm not sure what coverage you need. May dramatically change what you have to pay for your rental.

I am not entirely sure if there is extra insurance, but I will check - thanks for that advice. Quotes I have received over the internet know I am resident in the UK (often the websites are British and know I am renting in Florida). There are various documents they like to see including British driving licence, passport and return flight ticket (probably so they know they will get the car back!).
