Alamo car hire

Just a quick question, since we last went to wdw in 2008 the car hire company that virgin uses has changed from Dollar to Alamo, with Alamo when you book through virgin you can pick your exact car, can someone tell me how this works?

alamo lets you pick out your specific car from the group of cars of the size you're paying for..

in other words, if you rent an economy car, you would walk to the row of economy cars and pick out whichever one of that group that you want...

yes.....first you go to the alamo desk in the terminal to get all the papers..

then you cross over to the big covered parking lot where all the cars are parked...
each row is labelled (economy, mid-size, SUV, Luxury, etc.).
you then walk down the row and pick out any car you want (in the size you're renting)..

we usually rent a mini-van....we check the back to see how much luggage space there is..and we check inside to see if there's a smell of cigarettes..
and i also start the car to see how much mileage there is..
obviously, we pick the minivan with the most luggage space, lowest mileage and that doesn't smell...
there are usually at least 20 different vehicles of each size to choose from...often more than that...

Just to add that the keys to the cars are in them. Once you have signed all the rental documents, etc., you are left to choose your car in your own time.

Once you've chosen your vehicle you drive to the booth at the exit where your rental papers will be checked - so, if you had paid for a compact and were driving out in an SUV, it would be noticed!

Has anyone used the online check in?
We would like to do this next month but can't find the right page on the Alamo site. I hope there is this option when our tickets etc arrive from Virgin.

yes, i left that out!! the keys are in the cars...
so we pop into and out of cars, starting them to see how much mileage they have...i like to try for a newer car with as little mileage as possible...

and yes, they check your car at the exit of the alamo section of the lot...

by the way, i always find driving out of that parking structure onto the road a bit of a challenge.......but once you're out on the road it's not bad...
