AKV - What's so great about it now?

I've got to quit reading the AKL threads. I keep telling myself, I don't need more points, I don't need more points. I've got too many points and TS weeks now, but I really, really want AKL. It is gorgeous, I love the restaurants, I love watching the animals. I really, really want it!!

I thought the same thing - with 1150 points I certainly didn't need any more, especially when most of my trips are in studios (solo or as a couple).

However, like you I REALLY wanted AKV - so I sold off my 3 Vero contracts (total 160 points) and bought 150 AKV points. It cost some $$, even though I made a profit on the Vero points, but that $$ bought me 15 extra years of dvc so I figure it's worth it!

The plans for development of the new AKV came in the mail with our add-on contract, and it appears there will be a new savannah especially for this building. From what we can tell from the drawings, the majority of rooms in the new building will have savannah views.

One of our memorable experiences at AKL occurred one morning we were both up early sitting on the verandah. Our room overlooked a "watering hole". A cast member drove up in a truck, shooed away some big crane-like bird, disappeared behind a rock and...the watering hole completely drained away! She scrubbed the bird "decorations" off the rocks with a brush, raked the bottom of the "hole," climbed out, went behind a rock again, and within about fifteen minutes the watering hole was completely refilled and "reset." The effort put into caring for the animal habitat and keeping it healthy is one of the reasons why our AKV maintenance fees will be easier to pay...they are helping take care of "our" animals!

I haven't seen any literature on the new AKV, and I haven't been to the boards in a while, but...

Are we sure that all the AKV rooms will even look out over the area where the animals roam? Also, has anyone seen layout information on the rooms? Which DVC resort are they most similar too?

supposed to be 80% savana view, when completed.

Has anyone seen any plans to build a 'walkway' between AKV and AK? Not sure if the distance is too great? I would love to have 'Int'l Gateway' type access to AK from AKV.

Is the AK that close? If so, I agree 100%!:thumbsup2 ( coming in the "back-door" of EP!)

I think we talked about this in another thread.

First off, I think someone said it's about 1 mile to the AKL gates from the AKL entrance.

Second, it was pointed out that between the two there is some existing infrastructure buildings, and a bunch of swampy marshland and waterways...and a couple of goodsized bodies of water. So a walkway would be tough, an probably not practical.

I heard rumors, way back when AKL was still under construction, of a water launch to AK...but it never actually happened. I think direct transport (other than by bus or car, etc) from AKL/AKV to AK is not very likely.

I asked a CM at DVC today and he had another take - security. Especially with the animals around they didn't want people potentially doing something stupid and having to patrol that large an area was not practical. There is also an issue of garbage blowing into savannahs I suppose - I know the matriarch of our orangetang (sp) group at our local zoo died after eating a straw found in his habitat. So, no luck on that front. Oh well - just have to keep pushing for the monorail LOL.
