AKL standard or savannah?

We are staying at AKL for 3 nights at the end of our disney trip in july. I was considering getting a savannah view instead of a standard. Considering it will be july with all of the heat and humidity I was wondering how much we would actually use the balcony. Coming back in the evening from the parks I will want to hit the shower & stay in the air conditioning.

Opinions please from anyone who has stayed here in the heat of the summer.

Hi there..

I stayed at AKL in August last year - man was it hot!

We used the balcony a lot at night... it was lovely out there and the savanna is artificially moonlit so you could still see lots of animals. We would have a drink out there every night it wsa warm and humid but there was a beautiful breeze.

In the morning it sure was special to open up the drapes and say good morning to a giraffe! I would have coffee out there... if you have the savanna view balcony you are sort of "drawn to it" you keep going out!

Standard rooms have balconys too (I think?) you could still sit out - but the view won't be as nice (duh!)

So if you can swing the extra cost - go for it - I really think you will enjoy the balcony in the evening.... if it is a big price difference and it's too much to do - then book the standard room and maybe you will luck ot with an upgrade to poolview or savanna:D

There are lots of other areas to view the animals besides the room balconys - so don't stress!

>>^..^<<

The bugs were pretty bad last time we stayed there during the summer. (The invisible ones I think they are called "no-see-ems") We didn't spend a lot of time on the balcony because of them. The animals were out mostly very early in the morning and very late in the afternoon.

We've stayed in both standard and savannah view roooms. For a short stay, you can't beat the price of the standard view. :)

Standard view works fine....

As you said after a long day in tremendous heat....it's good to cool down and put your feet up inside rather than getting all sticky again!

There are so many places to see animals at this resort i don't think I would ever consider savannah view...JMO :D

True, but when you can wake up to and enjoy the view anytime in your PJs, barefoot or while relaxing in your room, that is worth every extra penny!

To us it is savannah and feeding areas all the way!

I agree with >>^..^<< if you can afford it go with the savannah!

I don't think I'd go back unless I had a savannah view, there's really nothing like it!

Make sure and bring some Avon Skin So Soft bug repellant, it keeps them away better then traditional bug sprays! Our first night at WDW last April my DD had her legs biten up by them on the ferry boat ride back from the MK. The next day I started putting the spray on her and she didn't get another bite for the rest of trip.

I wouldn't consider anything but a savannah view at the AKL. That is the whole point of the resort. You give up boating, jogging trails, and even a quiet pool for those animals, don't do it in vain! If you are booking a standard view, go with a standard view at the WL. There are more amenities there, and the view really doesn't matter.

That is such a good point! I hope I didn't make a mistake booking std. view at AKL for our honeymoon. We've already stayed at WL and wanted to try something different. Can't afford savannah view this time around or else I would love to do it :(

gumdrop - Don't worry! I couldn't disagree more with Demosthenes. There is SOOOOO much more to AKL! That resort is just BEAUTIFUL everywhere!!!!! Yes, savannah view is better than std, but it's not the be all end all. If you can't afford, no problem. Don't give up on the resort all together because of that. AKL doesn't need quiet pools because the main pool is so large, there are plenty of "quiet" areas within it. I personally don't jog and can't afford boating at WDW, so that's no sacrifice. The atmosphere at AKL is beyond words - you have to experience it yourself! Who knows, maybe you'll get an upgrade when they hear it's your honeymoon!

S. C. - We were there last May, temps 97 everyday. We did use the balcony alot, just as the other posters mentioned. There was a lot of talk on these boards about no-see-ums before we went, but we didn't encounter any. (And ALL bugs LOVE my DD and DS!) The other point I'll make is that we enjoyed the animals VERY much even from the room. We had the curtains open almost 24/7. We slept with them open so we could even look out when we awoke during the night! If you can afford it, it is definitely worth it. If it is too much, then don't fret - there are MANY other things to recommend this resort. You will LOVE it!!!

IMHO, what you go to the AKL for is the animals. The whole attraction is waking up with a giraffe out of your window and going to bed watching zebras on the savannah. There are some legitimate problems with the AKL that are a function of the lodge's primary attraction. A pool view or a standard view IMHO spoils the magic of the experience.

Don't get me wrong, DW and I love this resort, but I think it is a total waste to stay there if you're not in a savannah room. The following lists some of the shortcomings that the resort has, and that you might want to consider:

1.) The resort has no quiet pool. I know that this isn't important for a lot of people, but for DW and I, the quiet pools afford a lot more...well...quiet. The AKL pool is one of the most crowded we have experienced, and it is not a relaxing place to spend a warm afternoon.

2.) The resort is very remote. While this is part of the appeal, it causes a problem when it comes to nightlife and dining out. For a lot of people, Jiko and Boma aren't their cup of tea (I love them, but DW isn't as adventurous as I am). Of course, any other resort may have restaurants that don't appeal to you too, but they have one huge advantage over the AKL; they are close to other resorts. From WL, you can take a boat to FW or CR and sample the restaurants their, or take a monorail to the GF or Poly from the CR and try their restaurants. At the Epcot resort area, you have more than 25 restaurant choices within minutes of your resort, and that's walking. At AKL, when you want to try and go somewhere else to eat, you better drive, or you may spend more than an hour waiting on busses. Also, there is only one lounge and no special shows, like EWP and FIS at the MK resorts, or Illuminations at the Epcot resorts. It also doesn't feature the kind of entertainment you get at the BW area.

3.) The jogging trail is something that is important to DW and me. We run 5-7 miles most days, and while you can do it on a treadmill in a nice gym at the AKL (for a fee) you can't do it outside (for free). But that isn't the only recreational option missing from the lodge. There is no boating (obviously), no bike rentals, and no tennis courts. This resort is not the place for active people. It simply doesn't cater to them. (Of course, this is also part of the charm of this resort. It really is a vacation within a vacation.)

4.) Transportation is sort of a grey area. I find the busses to be efficient, though not fast. You often times do wait more than the ten minutes you hear bantered about on this board, but heh, you're on vacation. Chill out. All in all the transportation is fine...but, there is nothing special about it either. It doesn't have the excitement or thrill of the monorail or even the boats. In the most imaginative place on the earth, you are transported by the least imaginative mode of transportation. I think that this, more than anything else, leads to guest's dissatisfaction with the AKL's transportation. Practically speaking, it isn't a valid complaint, but it sure does fall short in the magic department.

O.k., so now I sound like I hate this resort. I don't at all. DW and I almost always split stays at this resort because it is so remote. It is like being on an African Safari (ok, sort of). But to me, I don't want the safari without the animals. If I were you, I'd probably change my ressie to the WL, or cancel some flowers at the wedding;), and pay the little bit extra for the Savannah room.

:) Trust me, the wedding is bare bones as it is--60 guests, handmade invitations, barely any flowers!. We got our priorities in order and decided to buy a home rather than spend spend spend on the wedding! We are redoing the entire house, therefore, no tengo el dinero :( But now I'm still stuck on this AKL decision. Some, like sharoncity, make me want to just go for it and experience it--it does sound really cool and unique. But you make a lot of sense too with your points. We could go back to WL, but we really want to try something different before we do a repeat. I really wish there was ONE resort at Disney so we didn't have to choose! I keep doubting my choices.

It is! And if you go into it with an understanding of what you're getting, you probably won't be dissapointed. AKL is one of the best themed resorts on property. If you like the WL, you'll like this place as well. I just think that the WL std. room is a much better value than the AKL std. for the reasons stated above. You do give some things up to stay at AKL, and if you have a std. room, what are you giving those things up for? If the seclusion and uniqueness of the resort is enough for you, then its great! But if you want a little more from your hotel, you could be dissapointed.

Standard better than nothing at all... But if you can squeeze in the savannah view, it will be worth every penny!

Where else in the US can you wake up to the view of majestic, African animals right out of your window? It is like making the long trips to the National Zoo and San Diego because nowhere else in the US can you find pandas.. It is for the sake of enjoying what you can't get elsewhere!

You can get the ambiance of the Port Orleans, Beach resort or maybe even the tropical lush of the Polynessian in nearby resorts and sites. But nothing beats the dramatic, African ambiance of the AKL! It is definitely worth squeezing the marrow out of.

My DH and Ds stayed at AKL last year, middle of July, very hot and humid. We booked a standard room, but sent a fax 3-4 days before arrival stated that we were coming for the first time and it was a special occassion for DS. We received a complimentary upgrade to savannah view. It was awesome. yep...really, really hot, but we still hung out on the balcony in the morning and evening. I would say if you have never stayed there, go to AKL...we loved it and were really grateful for the upgrade!!! We still can smell that aroma of AKL. Anyone who has been there nows what I mean...I miss it. There is nothing like that resort. I have been to 5 different resorts.

I think you should keep your standard room at AKL. Stop doubting your choice and just enjoy it! I've got a standard room booked there myself and I'm already stretching the budget by not picking a moderate - I just can't afford the savannah view with my current budget. If things change between now and then I'll see but otherwise I'm happy with what I have. If you really are afraid of missing out on something why not make the last night or two of your stay a savannah room and then you can plan on using those days to enjoy your balcony/room more than the previous days. Usually the magic words "I'm on my honeymoon" get you anything you want! Maybe seeing the savannah rooms tacked on to the end of your stay they'll upgrade you for the rest of your stay at no charge. Be sure to use your best "I'm on my honeymoon voice!" :smooth: LOL (My husband still teases me about me whining that at times during ours when something wasn't going my way - like the airline not giving us seats next to each other on the plane and that kind of stuff). I had a bare bones wedding myself because we were paying for it (my parents were deceased) so I understand the need to conserve the moola!

Enjoy!

We have stayed at the AKL 3 times and it is our favorite. We had pool view on our first stay and the pool is a wonderfull view in itself for less than the Savannah view and only a little more than the standard view. On our second trip we reserved a Savannah view; we arrived the day before Easter and wanted to make sure we got a Savannah View and boy did we pay for it. But, we have two boys (3&6) and they both love animals...favorite show is Stanley. Quite frankly, we prefer the pool view. The pool is fantastically landscaped in a very tropical/jungle style and is beautifull to look at from your balcony; very casual but manicured at the same time.

I disagree with Demosthenes. There is so much more to this resort than the animals and Savannahs...the story tellers, the arts and crafts for the kids, hidden Mickeys, Jiko, the decor, the ambience (FYI, the aroma is that of a camp fire not the animals), etc. To tell you the truth, the Savannah is really kind of scrubby looking when you don't have that Zebra to look at! lol

On our most recent trip we had a pool view again and really enjoyed it more than the Savannah view from our previous trip. We were on the 4th floor and had a great overview of the pool area.

We have stayed on the Zebra trail each time. It is closest to the elevator bank that goes to the first floor where you access Mara's and the pool. Also same level as Boma's. You have to try the Zebra domes...their deserts are why we go to Boma!

BTW TreeOfLife, the Atlanta Zoo has Pandas, too; two of them.

i just got back from a trip and stayed 6 nights at akl. i booked standard but got a pool view upgrade on the 4rth floor, and as Minnie's Mate said, it is a beautiful view too and great spot to be. i enjoyed the akl for everything it has to offer, even without the savannah view. there are tons of places to view the animals, from both inside and outside. i loved grabbing my coffee in the morning and going out to one of the viewing areas. although i did have a lovely pool view, i would stay here again in standard even if i had a parking lot view, i am not in my room much anyway. enjoy.
katypop :D

the good posts on the pool view. I have 11 nights booked there in August, as much as I would love to be able to see the animals when ever, I couldn't see paying that much for the Savanah view. There are plenty of viewing areas in the resort, too. I may fax in a room request, but I may also just take my chances. I have visited the resort once, to eat at Boma, and I think it is a really neat place. OP, don't second guess yourself. You will have a nice room, and there will be plenty of things to do. You may get lucky and be upgraded, but having a new home that you will be living in for a long time versus spending another grand maybe for a week? Go for the standard and enjoy the resort!

I had this same problem. We went back and forth for along time about which view that we wanted. We finally went with the savannah view room. I kept reading different posts on how people had booked a standard room and then were lucky enough to be up-graded. So I thought about switching back and seeing if I could get upgraded. Finally after a long thought out process we said that since we could afford the savannah view room just to stay with that because what happens if we dont get upgraded. Its better to be safe than sorry.

So IMHO I would say if you have the money go ahead and book the savannah and if you dont have it or not to sure if you want to pay the x-tra money than stick with a standard room and fax the resort your info and then mention it again upon ck-in.

When in July will you be there?
We are cking in on the 29th and leaving on 8-5-03
Just curious

If you can afford the extra $$, then you should go for it. If you can't, I would say, don't worry about it ... there are lots of areas around the resort to view the animals. Just keep in mind that the savanah area is a big place, the animals tend to wander about ... they may not always be at your window (or in view of your room) at all times. Sometimes I would wake up in the morning and there would be no animals there ... and then sometimes at night or in the afternoon there would be a couple of them wandering around. I guess it just really depends on what they feel like doing :p

I found one of the best places to look at the giraffes was at a spot near the pool. I got some of my best pictures there. I had a lot of ankole cattle and eland near my room ... some of the other animals, I had to go to searching for :p

Have a great trip no matter what you decide :)
