I remember somebody here talking about a tour of Jiko that one can go on. I don't remember all the details, but it's a tour of the dining and cooking area that happens around mid-afternoon. I think it's something my daughter would be really interested in. Can somebody give me some more info on it?

The Jiko culinary tour is fabulous. You are taken into Jiko and a Chef talks about the food and some of their cooking techniques. They offer the Taste of Africa appetizer to sample. Then you go to Boma and meet one of their Chefs. They offer a soup sample and I believe we each had a Zebra dome as well. The tour is very interesting and well worth the 30-45 minutes it takes.

They offer the same kind of Culinary tour at Saana as well. Also very intersting and worth the time.

Last summer DH and I did the tour at Sanaa. We showed up at the front of the restaurant where several CM's were standing. When we told them that we'd like to do the tour, they turned to each other like they weren't sure what to do. Eventually, someone walked us through the restaurant explaining the decor and its cultural significance. Then we were seated in the lounge where they gave us the bread service (yummy) and the chef came out and talked to us about the menu and cooking methods. Wasn't a big deal but we enjoyed it. Mostly we have a good laugh wondering if we were the only people to do this tour.

it's probably always at the same time, but the info should be listed in the AKV activities schedule that you get when you check in.

If you have little ones, they can do cookie decorating at Boma around 1 PM. I don't remember the exact time, but my daughter did it twice. The cookies were yummy sugar cookies in animal shapes.

We just did the tour at Boma and Jiko in May. It was very informative. Our guide's name was Sixpence. He was very good. We got to try the soup that were out for the buffet and a dessert at Boma. We then went to Jiko and had the bread sampler with dips, They were very good. I would reccommed this tour. It was me , DH, DS age 25 and DD age 22. Enjoy.

Both times I did it, I read it in the activity schedule and just showed up at the appointed time.

I just love the DIS! I missed this information about a tour at the restaurants during our last stay at Jambo House last June. Will look for it on our next vacation there in June 2011. Thanks Simba's Mom for the thread and to everyone else for the posts.

We did this is March. No sign ups just show up at the podium. We had one of the hostesses from Boma show us around there first. She let us try soups, explained what some of the food were and how they were traditionally prepared and eaten and then we got to all try a Zebra dome. None of the chefs/cooks talked to us though. They actually all ran off and our guide was a little aggitated with them since they kind of refused to help her which they were supposed to do. She apologized left and right about it too.

Then we were handed off to a hostess at Jiko and she walked us around the restaurant and explained everything there. We then got to have the bread service and dips. Well I should say the couple who walked in 5 minutes prior did. I did get to take a look at it. We got to chat with some of the guys who make that Naan.

We enjoyed it and we will try it again when we go in March and maybe this time we won't have overly rude people in our tour!

We did not sign up in advance. We did see it in our information packet upon check in and I had also heard about it on this site. We just went down one day and asked about it at the podium by Boma. There were seven of us on the tour. Myself, DH, DS, DD, another couple and a single lady. Nice group. Sixpence told us so many stories about living in Africa. It was so interesting. He described what types of meals he ate there compared them to what we eat. Quite interesting. The tour is not long but well worth it.

Do you have to be staying at AKL to take this tour? We would love it, and plan to stay at AKL at some point, but could you go over, after a day at Ak for example, if you are staying somewhere else?

In actuality I guess you could be staying anywhere since they've never asked for ID (at least the three times I've gone).
