Which one?

I am planning another trip for late 2017 and my husband wants to stay at AKL at some point.

We have seen the resort when we were down there at christmas time and while it wasn't my favorite I kind of owe him this since I got WL for the last trip.

He loves the idea of the pool view and the savannah view...so which one is better?

I haven't stayed there yet, but when I do I am going for the Savannah view figuring I can look at a pool at just about every other resort.

Savannah View is much better, but significantly more expensive than pool view. I find it more relaxing and entertaining to watch the African animals than the human animals. ;)

I've only stayed at AKL once, and pool view was what fit my budget then. I was not disappointed with it, but the answer to the question, "which is better" is definitely Savannah View.

Savannah view is awesome!!! You can't get this view at other resorts. You can get the pool view anywhere.

Ok, so Akl is our favorite resort. So much so, that we are now Dvc members here. You didn't mention your budget in your post, so I will break it down for you like this.... Although I may confuse you even more, lol....

Savannah view - totally amazing to relax watching animals from your balcony. It's great to drink coffee in the morning, or wine in the evening... BUT, if you are the type to run around all day at the parks, you may not spend a lot of time out there. There are many, many viewing areas all over the resort to check out the animals. Don't think your balcony is the only spot. Also, the resort is very large, and a Savannah View may be a long walk from the lobby, pool, food, and bus stop.

Pool view - Much less expensive than Savannah.... You are guaranteed a great location in the lodge... Close to the bus, lobby, laundry, gym, food, and of course, the pool. During the afternoon they have activities by the pool, which may be loud, in case you have small children who need to nap. There are also animal viewing areas near the pool, so you won't need to go far.

IMHO, if you can afford it, and you think you are only staying at the Lodge this one time, I'd probably choose Savannah View, for the experience. I would request a room close to the lobby though. But, you certainly can't go wrong with a pool view... We request it often! Sorry if I made your decision harder, lol. Good luck!

Everything will depend on if the military deal gets extended. We will have 2 young kids with us so we plan on sitting outside and having a drink while they are sleeping in the evenings. It probably will be our only time at the lodge. But it's good to know about putting a request in to stay closer to the lobby as we will have his mom with us who can't do a lot of walking.

For both views, they also have bunk beds that you can request for the kids.... Ours totally loved that special treat!

Don't they have different savannah view rates? Some better than others?

All official Savannah Views are the same rates. Although there are actually some views that are classified as standard view, that actually have animal or partial animal views... Unfortunately, you cannot request them as such. If you book standard view, you MAY get lucky, you may not. If you want Savannah, book Savannah, period. Personally, we've booked standard, and gotten amazing animal views, twice. We've also booked standard, and gotten standard more than twice, lol.

We love AKL and thought that the pool view was great. We were not in our room that much, so a pool view was just what we needed.

My parents had a savannah view and they thought it was really good, they do spend quite a bit of time in their room.

I feel the same - including loving AKL so much, that's where we bought DVC!

Are you getting two rooms? I don't think you can sleep 5 in one room at AKL, unless one of your kids is very young.

Kids will be 3 and 1 when we go.

We've stayed both and while the savanna view was nice, I loved our pool view just as much. As a pp mentioned, there are several animal viewing areas around the resort, so having a savanna view isn't a necessity for us. With that said, I don't think you can go wrong with either as both views are great, but I wouldn't hesitate to book pool view again. Good luck.

For both views, they also have bunk beds that you can request for the kids....

Just wanted to clarify that bunk beds are a request for standard view and CL rooms, but are a bookable category for pool and savanna view. If the OP books pool or savanna, she will have to book that specific room type with bunks.

If it's in your budget, go with the Savannah view. It is amazing! There's nothing like coming back to your resort after a trip to the parks to watch the animals from your balcony.

For me if I am going to be staying there I want a savannah view so I can hang out on the balcony with my coffee in the morning enjoying the animals.
