Been a while since we have posted so glad to be back..

We have got a great price with disney direct travel(beat virgin by £350) fopr a 2 week stay in AKL.

We however have a dilema.....we are only in a standard room..what are they like?

do we spend the money upgrading the room or do we upgrade to PE on Virgin...

if we upgrade when can we do the upgrade as no flights are yet listed for virgin

thanks

The Savannah Rooms as AKL are lovely BUT expensive - if it was me I would prefer to spend the money on the room rather than the flight - after all, the flight is over in a relatively short time span but you will be spending 2 weeks in and out of your room.

I would never pay price for a Savannah room, last month paid £82/night for a std room which is 4 times what we paid offsite. Thankfully we got free upgrade to Savannah room, would not have enjoyed half as much in std room and by far would prefer our £20/night offsite room to std AKL.
Difficult choice, I would also never pay for Premium Economy, but my Brother won't travel in anything less than P/E, everyones different.

I leave for AKL on friday.

We are flying PE and only staying standard. (Was hoping for an upgrade but sadly we have not got it, as i have rang AKL to find out)

The cost was about the same PE or Savanna view but we went with the Flights. (Thomson Fly)

Will let you know what the room and flights are like when i return.

Andy

When we went to AKL in Sept 2004 we were upgraded to a Savannah room which was lovely.

However I have booked the AKL for next year and gone for a standard room. I was going to upgrade to Concierge but, to be honest, I have gone off this idea for the same reason I haven't gone for Savannah room. When we are in our room we are either asleep or getting ready to go out again. It is very expensive for a view of the animals and to be honest you can see plenty of the animals from the viewing areas downstairs. So I thought I would watch the animals before I went to my room and get up a bit earlier and see them before I leave the resort. That way I am saving about £700 (I think) which I can do a lot more with on the rest of my holiday.

The other consideration os that the animals are not always outside your window. They are left to roam and go where they choose so somethimes we were looking at an empty savannah or they were too far away!!

We stayed in a Savannah room during our stay in 2005. The first room we were allocated was dirty. It looked as if somebody had come back into the room after housekeeping as the top bed sheet was pulled back as if someone had had a snooze and there was a glass and coke bottle on the table. We called reception and were told somebody was going to sort but after 30 mins nobody came so DH had to go down to reception himself.

The room we were given was right on the egde of our wing and we could hardly see anything (the previous room was on the semi circle of the rooms facing into the savannah). However we soon realised that the giraffe preferd this area (maybe because quieter :confused3 ) and every time we looked out the balcony they were there. Was it worth it? Yes but for only 15 mins before we dashed off to the park again so in that case probably not.

I haven't travelled by PE so can't comment but if I was doing it again I would save the cash and treat myself in the parks instead.

Thanks all.....

i think well stay in standard room and use the money elsewhere

thanks again

Hi

I Got back on saturday and i have got to say the upgraded flights were definatly worth the money.

It helped most in the US. As we got of plane 1st when we landed at Sanford. Which meant no Q's for US security checks.

Also felt the better service while in the air. Hostesses were there in an instant when called for. Etc. etc..

But on return the seperate Q for check in helped massively as the Q was hugh as there was serveral Thomson flights leaving that day but on one very very very long Q.

Also at Sanford you get to use the premium lounge (Palm lounge), while waiting for the flight, 2 free alcoholic drink unlimited soft and hot drinks. Free Internet etc etc...

Also we got a upgrade in the end to a Savanna/Pool view room.

I will be writing a trip report soon

Regards

Andy

Does anyone know what the value rooms at AKL are like? Are they just slightly smaller than the standard?

We were going to stay at SSR again in 2010 with DVC but AKL is less points so confused about where to go now.

Is anyone on here that have stayed at both and can compare? Only been to SSR.

Thanks

As far as I'm aware the rooms are all the same size 344 Square feet - smallest rooms for deluxe hotel.

Studio at SSR is 355 Square feet.

We stayed in a Savanna room in 2007, yes it was lovely (especially with a jug of Pimms) to sit on the balcony in the evening or to stand & watch animals early am whilst waiting for DS or DD to get out of shower etc. But to be honest we didn't feel we used it enough to warrant the extra cost. Next year we've booked a standard view room.

Ohhhh

I request you all, please dont remind me Disney.....
I have very terrible experience there :guilty:

The value rooms are indeed a little smaller than the others. If you book a 1 or 2 bedroom value they don't have the sleeper chair in the living area as there isn't enough room for it.

The view differs as well in that you may get a parking lot view however some values do actually have a Savannah view but they are still values because of the room size.
