To the member that apparently just recently canceled their AKL Concierge room for the night of May 9, 2009: Thank you! :thanks:

Thank you, as well, to all you VWL and AKL owners who decided not to go at the beginning of May so that there would be a 2-bedroom available for me at the 7 month window. :thumbsup2

We've never stayed at VWL or AKL, but we like them and almost always plan a meal at one or both of them just so we can enjoy and experience the atmosphere of those two resorts (and enjoy some good food, of course). My parents loved them the times we've eaten there when they were with us. In fact, the last time they were with us my father actually went to the front desk at each of those resorts and picked up information about staying there and made the comment that he and my mother would have to come down to WDW for a couple of days sometime just to stay at one of those resorts.

Also... my parents love AK. Of the four parks it is a close second to Epcot for their favorite park. They especially love the safari and all the other live animal attractions.

When we decided we'd be going in May 2009 we decided to invite them again, and I decided that I would try to split the stay between VWL and AKL so that my father could get his wish to stay not only at one of those resorts but both of them (without having to spend his own cash to do it). Not to mention my wife and I getting a chance to stay at them for the first time. In addition, I also realized that we had enough points that I could book one night in an AKL concierge room; so I decided I would try to do that so that we could experience at least one of the special safaris that are only available to concierge guests.

Of course I first reserved the entire trip at our home resort (BWV) within the 11 month window so that we'd at least have a reservation, but right at the 7 month window I called and successfully switched the first half to VWL. Then right at the 7 month window again I successfully booked AKL savannah view for the second half - but, unfortunately, at that time they didn't have a 2 bedroom concierge room available for May 9 (a Saturday night, so we can do the sunrise safari on Sunday) so I waitlisted.

I didn't hold out much hope since there are so few AKL concierge rooms; and I thought that if it did come through it probably wouldn't come through in enough time for me to book a special safari before they are filled up. But, of course, every few days I would log onto the member web site anyway to check to see if it came through.

Well, today I logged in again - expecting no change this soon - and to my surprise there it was: "2 BR L/O Concierge Jambo" for May 9! :woohoo:

Not only does my father not know that we'll be staying at VWL and AKL, but neither does my wife. Only my mother and I know - and my mother doesn't know about the concierge night and the special safari! My 4 year old son, who will be 5 then, doesn't even know that we're going to WDW at all - and hopefully my wife can keep quiet without bursting at the seams, so that we can completely surprise him. (Then there's our infant son who has no clue now... and will have no clue then.)

I can't wait to see the my father's and my wife's reaction (:yay::cool1:) when we pull up to VWL instead of BWV... and then the next reaction (:cheer2:) a few days later when I tell them to pack because we're moving to AKL... as well as everyone's reaction (party:) when I tell them to get to bed early Saturday night because we will be experiencing a special safari early the next morning!

(popcorn:: <-- me enjoying the "show")

So, again, to the person who so graciously canceled their AKL concierge room for the night of May 9, 2009 (even though you didn't realize you were doing it to help me); as well as to all you VWL and AKL owners who decided not to go at the beginning of May:
Thank you! :worship:

Now I just have to figure out a creative way to keep it a secret when my father and my wife start asking if I've reserved BWV or if we're going to try a different resort this time.

This is so exciting to read, I don't think I could keep it a secret!! May 9th is our older DS's birthday, and that has nothing to do with your wonderful happenings, I'll throw it in because it is!

So, really, you weren't on the waitlist for long, were you, just since October 9th? I'm really glad to know this. I would like to book a concierge stay coming up, and if I have to waitlist, I will! I wonder if the room came through because someone was walking their reservation. :confused3

I'm glad for you.

I was shocked at how short a time I was on the waitlist.

I didn't think about that - re: someone walking their reservation. I suppose that is a possibility.

One (sad) thought I had was that I may have benefited from someone's misfortune or reluctant decision because of concern over the recent economic turmoil -- I like your idea better, as well as the other idea I had that someone had double-booked dates and just finally decided for sure which dates they are going to go.

Last fall I waitlisted for a couple of things. I finally canceled one of the waitlists, and it came down to about a month before the trip for the other to come through. (I already had other reservations, but that change simplified things.)

So my previous waitlist experience was months of waiting and wondering.

Well, I'm glad it was a short time of uncertainty! When I do waitlist, I'm someone who does check every day, and most of my waitlists have come through.

The "secret" I'm trying to keep is that I booked the extended family up to have the BCV's Christmas tree when our DGC will be down with their parents. We're taking everyone to the MVMCP and I just thought it would be nice to extend the party in to the villa. I wasn't even going to tell DH, but that didn't work, and I am trying so hard not to mention it to DS and DDiL, they have been calling me up a lot lately talking about the plans for our November trip.

It's going to be so wonderful when your DP's realize what a very extra treat you're giving them next year!!!

Wow that is great! You will love the sunrise safari. I was on it in May and had an incredible time.

If you want to see some pictures from the safari, go to the 'Concierge Level Here we come" link in my signature and then find the links to day 4.

We were fortunate enough to stay in a concierge studio at AKV in July. We did both the Wanyama and Sunrise Safari and I think your parents will love your thoughtfulness.

Great pictures Donald is #1!

I'm really looking forward to getting to actually have a chance to take good pictures of the animals on the safari... instead on the regular safari trying to snap them off quickly whenever the safari truck slows down for just a split second, and ending up with blurry or odd pictures - such as a picture of a giraffe with it's head behind a tree, or a picture of the rear end of an elephant, etc.

Debbie... or anyone else that did more than one of the special safaris...
Did you not feel "over-safari'd" (or is it "safari'd-out")? Was it worth doing more than one, or if you had the chance again would you just do one (which one)?

The Wanyama Safari is the only way to get out onto the Savannas at AKL. There is an age limit of 8, and I think that's due in part to the meal at Jiko afterwards. The Wanyama Safari costs more -- $160 per person.

I think I preferred the Wanyama Safari (not Safari-ed out) because of the people with us from England and Ireland, and the unique experience. Breakfast after the Sunrise Safari was good at Pizzafari. I have done the backstage tour called Backstage Safari twice, and I think I prefer that experience to the Sunrise Safari. While there is no breakfast included, I learned about the Species Survival Plan, hurricane preparations for the animals, saw the amazing animal food prep areas. So I guess you can see I'm just open for almost any backstage experience involving AKL or AK.

We have done both the afternoon safari and the morning safari and don't feel "safari'd out." That said, we are doing concierge again next March and I asked my husband which of the safaris he'd like to do again. He picked the afternoon safari at AKV with Jiko's for dinner. We'll do the early morning safari again another time. They are BOTH great.

I know that the Sunrise Safari is only on Thursday and Sunday. What days do they run the Sunset Safari?

We are doing concierge next September. We are staying Thursday to Sunday so we can't do the Thursday Sunrise Safari. Were locals so doing the Sunday Sunrise is not an issue for us.

I'm thinking we'll do the Sunrise Safari, and probably a few of us will also do the Wildlife Discovery Excursion (I like that it actually gets off the normal safari path occasionally and can get closer to the animals, as well as the fewer number of people in a smaller vehicle).

We'll be eating at Jiko once anyway and (particularly at the nicer restaurants) we prefer to do early dinner reservations (i.e. before sunset) when we have our boys with us - better for our boys, and better for most other patrons (i.e. get the 5 year old and infant in and out ASAP :) ). So the Wanyama (Sunset) Safari doesn't really make sense for us this time. (Maybe I'll plan an anniversary trip for just me and my wife in the next few years and we'll do it then.)

Thanks, everyone, for all the congrats and for the safari advice!

JaxFLBear -

I had found this post from last year where JC posted detailed information sent by AKL concierge on all the special safaris:
[post]17015693[/post]

At that time the Waynama (Sunset) Safari was done on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.

(Although I suspect that is certainly subject to change, of course. And very well may have since that time.)

well, I may have been the one to help you out! I recently cancelled a concierge nite of May 9, but it was for a studio. We'll be there all week, and won't need the last nite as we'll be at a relative's house. Actually we may be cancelling the nite of the 8th as well at some point..

so glad I could make someone's day!!! have an awesome trip!

Laurie,

Thanks!! It very likely was you!

When I originally called at the 7 month window on Oct. 9 they only had a 1 bedroom available for May 9, and I needed a 2 bedroom. If I was at the top of (or the only one on) the waitlist and the 1 bedroom remained available for a week or so, then that 1 bedroom plus your studio would have created the 2 bedroom lockoff that I got.

Thank you very much!! My family is going to LOVE the special safaris!

I hope you have an awesome trip as well! (And say "thanks" to your relatives for me as well!)
