AKL Children's Activities

Does the AKL offer any children's activities during the late afternoon? My DW, 6 year old DS and myself will be there from 6/3 thru 6/7. I was hoping to surprise my wife with a spa treatment (along with one for myself) and was wondering if there are any children's activities (arts and crafts, etc) during the late afternoon for 60 to 90 minutes so that we could bring DS to the activity. Then DW and myself could indulge in a spa treatment and we could pick DS up after and the three of us could have dinner at Jiko. Seems like a god plan that could be enjoyed by all - but the kicker would be that there would be children's activities.

Your next question will probably be what activities they have, and I don't know.

But when we visited AKL, I remember reading the bulletin board and saw lots of kids activities.

By the way, great plan. My DW would think you are a romantic.

I don't think you can just leave him alone at the kids' activities. They're not meant to serve as a "daycare".

I was hoping for something they do like The Pirate Adventure or Great Adventures in Cooking at the Grand Floridian where I would be paying for the activity. My understanding is that the parents bring the children and leave them for a period of time with cast members who conduct the activity with the children. I really wasn't looking for a daycare - I was looking more along the lines of activities as was indicated in my original post.

I don't want to be rude or disagreeable but my original post said "...children's activities (arts and crafts, etc.)...'. I apologize if you take this the wrong way as it is not meant to be rude or disagreeable and I also apologize if my original post caused any misunderstanding. I did put the "etc" at the end so as not to limit my request for descriptions of activities to just arts and crafts and also because I do not know what, if any, children's activities there may or may not be. I, again, truly apologize if my wording (or lack thereof) caused you any misunderstanding.

While I have your attention (for which I thank you), do you know of any children's activities (arts and crafts, etc) at the AKL that are similar to children's activities at the GF (like the Pirate Adventure or Great Adventures in Cooking)?

Randyl, when we were guests at the AKL, my daughter did a bunch of activities. Most were in the afternoon outside on the pool deck. There was one time, however, when she did two activities in the evening inside the Lodge. One was a special talk on animals (I believe) and the other was some sort of scavenger hunt. She enjoyed everything that she did. I made sure that I was nearby because the activities weren't like they are at the GF (at the GF you pay for the pirate cruise, tea party, & cooking class and they are completely supervised -- that is, the children get signed in by the parents/guardians, a pager gets issued, and when the activity is over, the parents/guardians sign out the child & return the pager).

I don't know what time Simba's Cubhouse opens up, but my daughter loves going there (click here for a few photos). You should try to plan your special activities for when the kids' club is open and your child can attend. If you can't do that, another option is to hire an in-room sitter. We have used them in the past (the concierge set everything up for us). It worked out extremely well (we had three kids with us on that vacation: an infant, a low single-digit child, and a high single-digit child).

Thank you very much for your post! I'm thinking maybe I will just send my wife to the spa and I'll watch my DS participate in the activities you mentioned. Thank you also for the photo's of Simba's Playhouse - the place looks great!

You could also book your spa time at the GF and then your daughter could do one of the activities you referenced in your post. My kids have done the Grand Adventures in cooking and liked it very much.

You could also arrange a spa treatment in the evenning, when your daughter could take advantage of the kids clubs, and have the masseuse come to your room. However, to my knowledge, there are no programs along the lines of what is offered at the Grand Floridian.

does anyone know if you have to be staying at AKL to do the AKL activities?

We were at AKL Nov 04 and had a wonderful time. It was the first time my kids (7 yo twins) DID kids club. They loved it, wanted to go back every night! It is such a wonderful resort, I felt comfortable with it. We also did all the afternoon activities including cookie decorating, animal identification via savannah guides, evening story telling, it was wonderful!!! I must say it the best kids club we have done and we have traveled quite a bit. Good luck and have a great trip!!! Donna
