AKL Animals in by 5pm?

I had always been concerned about the Pembe savanna rooms, especially since you automatically rule out seeing a giraffe from your room if you're there. With your comments, it makes my desire for Sunset savanna even stronger.

I hate that it ended up being a bad experience for you.

Thank you. I hated that it was our grandsons first experience at Kidani. We have wonderful memories with our granddaughters there. We had hoped for the same with our grandsons.

This reminds me of what the animal keeper told us at "Lunch with the Animal Keeper" about DVC members' reactions to the Pembe savannah. When they were designing Kidani, he said, they expected DVC members to be delighted with seeing the endangered anamels (I forget which ones he meant) rather than seeing the "plain old giraffes that they've probably seen 100 times [since, he told us, DVC members have usually visited WDW many times]. Wait till they see this!" He said that they were so disappointed to learn that DVC members really DO want to see the "plain old giraffes". Pembe savannah was thought to be a big plus, but instead it's been a big disappointment. I'm with you, I want my giraffes and this reminds me to specifically request Sunset Savannah for our next stay.

That's a great story! Given that, I wonder why they don't migrate over a few giraffes now - is there something about the terrain setup at Pembe that doesn't allow it?

Our room was 5257, waiting on DH to up load most of the photos, but hopefully this one works

as soon as the ostrich started acting strange the truck in the pic showed up and waited till she started to walk away from the egg, and they drove up and grabbed it. We were told there are no male ostrich on the savannas there so there was no chance of a baby ostrich in the egg. We actually went down to the outlook after it happened to find out why she would just leave the egg unattended.

We stayed in a Jambo club room one time and heard an animal crying outside during the night. In the morning, there was a big egg sitting there. The same thing happened, they drove up in a jeep and took it, the mom wasn't too happy.

The animal is an Okapi - a giraffe relative. I noticed last time I did Wanyama that they've reconfigured Pembe and were using part of it for the zebra breeding program too.

The barn for Pembe is not tall enough for giraffes, although the Sunset barn is so close to the edge of Pembe that I imagine they could figure something out to use that barn for a few Pembe animals. The bigger problem, I suspect, is that at only 4 acres Pembe is too small for many larger animals like giraffes to happily roam.
