I managed to get lunch reservations with the Princesses, now I am wondering how they do the whole food thing. Is it a buffet? How about the kids part, also a buffet? I have a 21 year old autistic son who definitely won't eat anything on the adult menu, but I would be happy to pay the adult fee if he could eat the things in the childrens menu, as long as it's "all you can eat", or "keep the food coming", like at Garden Grill.

Does anyone know how this works, or were you all too enamored by Ariel to notice the food? :lmao::rotfl2:

The way lunch works is that there is a cold appitizer buffet which has meats and cheeses and salads and fruit and such which is all you care to eat. Then everyone orders his/her own entree, just like most TS restaurants (not like a buffet or family style restaurant). After the main course the table is served a dessert plate which is family style (all desserts are on 1 plate for the table to share). I hope that helps you out.

By the way, after our last trip this past May I asked my girlfriend what her favorite part of the trip was. Out of everything she could have mentioned, meeting Ariel with her "land legs" was the highlight of the trip for her.

We've been able to order seconds for DD12 and in our case that even means the chef having to specially prepare the food and bring it himself since she's got a long list of food allergies. My understanding is that it's all you can eat even though you do order the meal off the menu. If he partakes of the appetizer bar then he may not even want seconds. There are some more unusual things on the appetizer bar but there's also salad, bread, cheese and deli meats.

You should be able to order your son's food off the kids' menu. You will pay the adult price as you already said you would expect to do. I bet you'd get an adult portion brought out to you. When you're checking in, I'd mention that he's autistic and would prefer to order off the children's menu so that you'll be given a children's menu to look over (I can't recall if it's on a separate menu or not).

The chef will prepare any of the food plain if your son would like that. DD10 a few weeks ago got a plain quarter chicken with white rice (rice isn't on the menu but you can get it). DD12 got plain steak tips with white rice. They do have food allergies so the chef did need to custom prepare food for them anyway but they're the ones who asked for plain food. Lots of people don't like sauces on their foods, especially sauces that they don't recognize, and it's generally pretty easy for kitchens to accomodate this.

Thanks for the info. Looks like we will all be meeting the Princesses!

Wait, wait, wait.

Are you suggesting that the entrées can be had in multiples? And more importantly, plates of dessert are available in multiples? Next thing, you'll be telling me that I can get herring and smoked salmon at the cold bar.

Maybe we can swing a second and third visit to Akershus over a three day span...

LMAO!!! Yes, that's what I'm saying. I wish I had known about the desserts several trips ago when we had 6 people and they only brought out one plate of desserts for some strange reason.

You know, I think the pickled herring and smoked salmon are among my biggest reasons for loving that place. I LOVE THOSE!!!!! It's odd, but the appetizer bar reminds me of traditional Jewish brunches my family had growing up (though no smoked whitefish or carp at Akershus). I had no idea that us Jews were really of Norwegian descent. LOL

Loved the cold buffet! So yummy. I didn't like my entree but the soup that came with it was soooo delicious. I don't usually love asparagus but I kept eating the asparagus and the salami and cheese from the cold buffet. YUMMMMMMMMM. Loved Akershus :goodvibes Have fun!

One non-food thing to note about Akershus is that they take your photo with the princess on duty before you are seated for your meal. They will bring you the photo package before you leave and it is included in the cost of your meal. Nice little perk!
And my husband may have to try to order another entree there on or next trip. I've always read that it was "family style," but never tried to order more entrees. I presume you have to finish your first entree before getting another, but it would be kind of nice to pick and choose.

I don't know that you can order a second entree. I believe that it's seconds on your original entree that is permitted. Confirm with your server.

I am thinking about have a Girls afternoon for me and a friend and 3 daughters. However, some of the daughters are rather picky eaters, but will eat chicken and steak. How do you think they will do here for lunch? I really want to eat with princesses while all the loud boys are yelling it up at Whispering Canyon!

My DD and I loved the desserts. Glad to hear you can get seconds. We have an adr for dinner October 12th.

Finally someone who loves pickled herring and isn't afraid to admit it! :thumbsup2
I think that most people who like it probably grew up with it :)
love, Love, LOVE the cold buffet!!!!

Did not know we could get seconds of anything else though
:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:
:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:
definitely need seconds on those desserts!!!

Just one more reason to look forward to my birthday dinner!!!

By the way, I'm curious, as I am an informal student of food heritage
and traditions and how they are handed down through the generations...
( I was the dorky kid fascinated with the concept that pizza
could not exist before Columbus because tomatoes are a New World food :lmao:
And while we're at it, neither would Norwegian potato lefse- I'm still a dork!:rotfl: )
Did any of your ancestors spend time in Northern Europe?
I always think of these foods as "germanic" in nature-
Norwegian being a distant relative of German in language and with
similar food traditions like the "seven sweets & seven sours".

For example, the British heritage side of my father's family tree
(in the upper mid west) traditionally eats oyster stew for Chrismas Eve.
Nobody else we ever knew did this, or associated oysters w/ Christmas.
We moved to Southern VA (no where near the coast)
and tons of people here eat oysters/ oyster stew for Christmas breakfast.
The connection?
A primarily English heritage handed down thru the generations.

There seem to be so many folks who dislike the pickled herring, beet pickles, etc.
They're all on the DIS telling how "bad" the food is at Akershus :upsidedow
which means there's more room & food for those of us who love their food :rotfl:

35 days until dinner at Akershus :cool1:

Gotta love that pickled herring! You're right, more for us. LOL

You know, my ancestry is all northern European. My family was kicked across Europe every time a country would decide they no longer wanted Jews until they settled in Russia and finally immigrated to Canada in the late 1800s. Very interesting!

I have an extremely picky eater in my 5 year-old daughter. She usually gets cheese pizza here, if I remember correctly. And there is fruit, cheese and rolls on the cold buffet that is appealing to the picky little ones, too.
