Is the AK map pin (the one you received from finishing the map at the event) the same as the one that the cast members received in their paycheck a few weeks ago for the AK 3rd anniversary? The pics on DIZPINS look the same. Are they? I have one that was given to a cast member and it isn't labeled cast exclusive on the back. Is the map pin labeled event or something?

I have the AK CM 3rd Anniversary as well, looking pretty familiar.

The new Safari Bus is just as disappointing. Same ol', same ol' with little turning wheels.

It aggravates me when Disney artists run out of imagination or they turn in the time card before getting inspired. I really hate it when they "come up with something new" and it is nothing but an older version where one color is changed.

All that bluff for nothing...

I doubt this is the artist's fault. I would blame the higher ups.

Making a color change on an existing pin is the cheapest way to produce a new pin. Any changes to the metal parts of a pin require a new die be made and therefore a fee is chrge to make this new die. I am sure with most of the pins Disney produces, especially rack pins, they get this fee waived as they are making LOTS of them. They may not be able to do this with some of the smaller LEs.

A new design requires an artist create new artwork. I suspect much of the pin designing is done freelance. This would require them to pay the artist and we all know how frugal Di$ney can be sometimes.

Still, Dom,

I am not as motivated to see a "new pin" where only the color or a jiggly whatcha-ma-callit thingie are changed.

You are possibly right about what it takes to create a new pin. But with the prices we pay, I'd like to see some improvement in that area, regardless of who speaks the last word.

I agree with you that for our money we should get a new design instead of a re-hash. Unfortunately the ones that hold the purse strings are not always the most creative individuals. There are also managers that don't have a clue and are only interested in their department's bottom line.

I have designed pins, t-shirts and patches for several soccer clubs and youth soccer tornaments in the area. I am familiar with the processes. Except for the actual printing/manufacturing each process requires artwork. Usually a black & white drawing and a full color one.

In each process changing a color, be it ink, thread or colored glass, the easiest, and therfore cheapest, change to make is to change a color. (Which is a good thing when an error sneaks through!) Anything else requires re-tooling and that gets more expensive.

I don't know of an artist that is lacking in ideas. I myself come up with alot every day. Some get tossed, some get filed, and a few start eating away at you until you have to get them out on paper.

As I said on another thread (started a new one by mistake) I agree with Dom - don't blame the artists - they're coimg up with the designs.

Between all the new DCA pins that came out, and all the others, if a few pins look familiar, I don't think there's lack of imagination at work, but lack of capacity might be.

Actually, my pocketbook is very grateful when every once in a while, I <i>don't</i> like a pin! They are creating plenty of pins I consider 'must-haves'.

Dom, thanks for your polite and enlightening reply!
It is a treat to have an artist that can shed some light on the process involved.
