AK for the 3rd time or DHS for the 1st?

I have 2 kids, 10 & 7. We have done AK 2x already (before Pandora) and have never been to DHS. I believe they will enjoy DHS more because of the character themed rides. (they do NOT like actually meeting/photographing with characters).
However I see so many mixed reviews about DHS I'm scared to go for it. We have to decide between the 2 parks as we cannot do both. Also, will not be returning to Disney anytime soon, and we've never seen Avatar if that matters.

Depends on what they like. Do they like thrill rides? Then RnR and ToT in HS are can't miss attractions. Do they like Star Wars? Again, HS is your answer.

If they don't like any of that, go back to AK

Good advice here. I would probably opt for HS since you've never been (the things that are closed aren't that big of a deal to me), unless you know your kids wouldn't like the big rides and Star Wars.

they do like rides and Star Wars! That was my thinking as well. thank you! Off to convince the hubs!

Another vote yes to HS. I'm one of those people that thinks you should try something at least once before you decide if you like it or not. Every park in WDW is ever evolving, heck I go at least twice a year and always find something new, so even though you've been to AK twice, there will always be new things to see.

If they like rides and Star Wars, DHS is a no brainer!
The jedi training is an absolute riot.
Toy Story Mania is also a riot. It puts Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin to shame.
Star Tours is a BLAST!
ToT is the best ride in all of DW (Not simulator based)
The muppet 3d show is a blast as well.
The Army green men side show is funny.
The Storm Trooper march is a nice "break"
If you like Star wars and ride, dhs is pretty solid.
Oh yeah, they have something called "Fantasmic," too. It's pretty well liked.

My 15 year old is insisting that we start 2 of our 5 PH days in HS. He was 11 during our last visit. My 10 year old's only two questions about our upcoming trip were "what will the pool be like at the new hotel?" and " when do we get to ride Tower of Terror? ". He was 7 during our last visit.

That is a tough question. Having never done DHS, there are some things there that are certainly worth seeing. However, Pandora is pretty amazing.

In your position, I'm not sure what I would choose, but for us (as we have already done DHS, and actually, quite a fair bit of what we enjoyed there has closed), we chose to skip DHS this year, and spend a day in AK instead.
