I read about the AK Meals Plus Program on mousesavers.com. Here is the info. Also, you don't have to buy one for each member of the party. I think this would be a great way to go on the day you go to AK.

JMHO

"Meal Plus" Program

The Animal Kingdom "Meal Plus" Program allows you to purchase a special voucher at any Animal Kingdom counter service restaurant (Restaurantosaurus, Flame Tree Barbecue, Pizzafari, or Tusker House) that entitles you to the following:

counter service meal with small drink (non-alcoholic) - but many readers report receiving a large drink

coupon for ice cream, popcorn OR a piece of fresh fruit

coupon for a bottle of water or soda

The cost is $11.99 for adults and $5.99 for kids, which is quite a good deal considering that the higher-priced counter service meals alone can set you back that much, once you add the drink.

The "Meal Plus" vouchers are only good the day you purchase them, but as MouseSavers.com reader Kim A reports, "I recommend buying the meal deal early (before the lunch crowd) so you have the coupons the whole day. You don't have to get your meal at that time. That way, if you eat a late lunch like we did, you can use the coupons for a snack and drink during the busy lunch time to hold you over for your later lunch. Especially with the hot weather coming, it was nice to be able to get an ice cream at noon."

What do you think?

I've done it and it is a good deal. The time that I did it, I used one of my
Q & C vouchers for me and then bought the kids meal deal for my kids. It was only $5.99 and I still got the drink and popcorn.

I would probably get the kids meal deal again and use the coupons from that. You do have to use them that day only and they are only good at AK.

We just used them at a cart on our way out of the park and ate/drank on the drive to MGM for the rest of our day.

I believe you can also purchase them at Guest Services when you enter the park. We always just purchased them right at Tusker House.

They are a great deal!

Thanks for the info. Too bad all the parks don't do this.

I'd love to eat a big breakfast at the AS food court, buy the vouchers at AK, use the snacks/drinks at lunchtime and get the meal around 4:30-5:00 (when everyone else is lining up for the resort busses!). That would make our food budget for the day about 65. for the four of us (DD12 and DD2, DH, and I)!

We did this and we just bought them when we had lunch (I think you can get them at any counter service place for lunch). It was soo nice to have the coupon for treat later on. It also seemed like a good deal! :flower:

Anyone know if you can use the DDE discount? (if you get the voucher at a DDE participating location of course...)

I have done this and loved it. BUT BE CAREFUL, find out when restaurants close. The parks were still open for another hour and Flametree closed. It was just 4 pm and the park closed at 5 pm. We were told to try somewhere else. We got there just at 4 as they were closing. They did not want to refund my money and they did not know how long the other restaurants were open. There was also a parade going on and there was no way to get anywhere else very fast. I argued that I did not see anything posted with hours, I assummed they would be open until the close of parks.

They finally refunded the cost - snack/ice cream coupon. I was still sad, no AK ribs.

KristinU - You cannot use your DDE card to purchase vouchers - this is clearly stated, but you can use your DDE card to purchase extra food such as rice, extra drink, etc. if necessary. Our DD2 was still hungry after eating the meals we chose with our voucher, so we got our DDE discount on extra side dishes. Every little bit helps!

Tusker House closes early as well. I unfortunately know that for a fact and it precipitated my one and only melt down at WDW, LOL.

I read the weekly newsletter from allearsnet yesterday and someone mentioned that these vouchers were discontinued- see quote below

Columnist Anita Answer, who is in the World as we go to press, reports: The Animal Kingdom Meal Plus Certificates are no longer available at that theme park's restaurants. I'm not sure when they stopped offering them, but when I tried to buy one today I was told they are not available any more.Does anyone have any info on this????

No, I hate to see the vouchers go! They were a good deal. DD and I actually split one voucher and got the large rib plate at Flametree with large soda. Plenty for us. Plus each got a snack.

Dang! We were going to use these in October. DS (14) can eat his weight in ribs. & popcorn.

I purchased the vouchers this past June and was able to use the DDE discount on the vouchers. The CM remembered my family coming to the character breakfast that morning and said we were also able to use the discount on the vouchers. I'm not sure if she was right but I did get the discount.

Chalk it up to being lucky, as you cannot use your DDE card for vouchers - we just literally returned from 2 weeks at WDW, but this is the first time that we didn't use vouchers as we ate at RFC and left early the next day to go to MK, so we didn't eat at AK much this trip, so I can't recall seeing if vouchers are still available or not. Sorry. Will post a dining trip report soon!

Lots of unpacking to do - Tiger

luvutigger,

You got a really good deal with the vouchers if they gave you the DDE discount. My DD asked about the discount on the vouchers last Jan and they said no.

All a moot point now, if they discontinue them.

We were able to buy an AK voucher the week of July 10th, can't remember what day, but when we went to AK on our last day July 18th they were no longer available. We ate at Tusker house both times.
