My wife's favorite bag that she planned to check for out trip measures exactly 61" according to my measurements. Just wondering if anyone has experience with how picky airtran is with this measurement as 61" is the maximum according to their website. If their agent measures 62" will they actually charge us $49 each way? She really wants to take that bag, but I really want to avoid that charge.
When they measure bags they sit them straight up and measure from the very top of the handle all the way to the floor. If the bag is soft sided and not full, (so things have a way of settling down to the bottom creating a buldge), they will measure the depth at the buldge, so they can get the biggest measurement. When they measure they also measure counting any pockets and from the tops of any handles. Anyway, my point is fill the suitcase, stand it up, then measure it including any buldges, handles, pockets and wheels.
