airtrann baggage allowance

My wife's favorite bag that she planned to check for out trip measures exactly 61" according to my measurements. Just wondering if anyone has experience with how picky airtran is with this measurement as 61" is the maximum according to their website. If their agent measures 62" will they actually charge us $49 each way? She really wants to take that bag, but I really want to avoid that charge.

They sure can, and sure may, and will charge you if it's over and they find out.. Also make sure you include the largest dimensions you can measure.. Meaning when it has stuff in it. Include any wheels that protrude / handles / bulging sides etc etc. Also, how much will this weigh? Make sure you dont go over weight also.

We found MCO agents follow the policies closer than our hometown airport. No measurements from home but on way back, agents measured our largest bag 3 times to ensure it was within spec without paying extra handling charge (it was).

With the larger bags, you may run into the weight limit and need to pay extra. Check it out on their website.

They can (and will frequently) measure any bag that looks even close. I've had my duffel measured multiple times. It's never even close to full and has always been within the limits, but for some reason they still like to measure the thing. When they measure bags they sit them straight up and measure from the very top of the handle all the way to the floor. If the bag is soft sided and not full, (so things have a way of settling down to the bottom creating a buldge), they will measure the depth at the buldge, so they can get the biggest measurement. When they measure they also measure counting any pockets and from the tops of any handles. Anyway, my point is fill the suitcase, stand it up, then measure it including any buldges, handles, pockets and wheels.

Probably a good idea. Airlines are looking for any extra cash they can get, and if it would come up that day, over the limit, they'll charge you. And as others have said it would be super easy to go overweight with that too. Surprises at the check in counter arent REALLY what you want..
