Airtran has changed our return flight 5 times so far (vacation 8/12-8/19) and I really don't like the time that they have changed us to, nor do I like any of the other return flights.

If I call them, will they refund (not credit) me for the portion of the return flight?

Also, what is everyone's experience in booking one way tickets? I want to keep our outbound flight to Orlando, but if I can get a refund, I would like to book a SW return flight at a better time. I have never booked one-way flights - is it more expensive??

It depends on the rules you've booked under. In most cases, the days of more expensive one-way domestic flights have gone by the wayside, so it's probable that you can get a refund only for the return. But, it's also possible that your fare categories requires a round-trip purchase, in which case you either can't, or would get a very small amount back. Likewise, it's possible that you paid different amounts for the departure and return legs, and you'd only get the fare of the return leg credited, not half the total fare. (That can sometimes be an advantage though.)

Southwest and Air Tran (as well as a few other low-cost carriers) round trip flights are priced each way so there would be no difference in price if you booked a round trip or two one way flights. We often book one way tickets on Southwest and Air Tran - it makes it easier if you need to cancel or change one portion.
I can't answer your question about a refund from Air Tran. I do know that with Southwest, you get a credit that can be used anytime within a year.

I have recieved a refund from airtran when they changed my flight times and the new time was not acceptable, however you didn't tell us how much of a time difference it is. My flight changed by at least 45 minutes, not sure how much of a time difference it needs to be to qualify for a refund.

Have you looked for alternative flights? I would make sure I had something else before I got my refund from Airtran.

I've heard of refunds/changes for even 1 minute that their original flight was changed.
