Is there a chart somewhere that says how many miles each upgrade is?

Their website says:
$49 for Short-Range Nonstop Flights
$69 for Medium-Range Nonstop Flights
$99 for Long-Range Nonstop Flights
$129 for Extra-Long Range Nonstop Flights

So, what is considered a short-range vs mid, long or extra long flight? There has to be an exact number of miles.....

Thanks.

They used to have a chart on their website, but I haven't been able to find it in quite a while. Not sure if it even exists any more.

I thought they did too.... something like short (0-499 miles), medium (500-999), long 1000-1499, and extra-long (1500+). Those numbers are just guesses, but something like that.....

I looked up MSP-ATL and it is 907 air miles......

They charge $69 each way from Indy to Orlando for the upgrade. I believe the air miles for this trip is 829 miles each way.

They charge $49 for Flint, Mi to Orlando, if this helps. It is about 1100 miles.

I actually remember seeing a chart that listed the actual cities. It listed the fee for flights in and out of Atlanta and also Baltimore. It also listed other departure arrival cities, there were only a few lists since most of their flights go through Atlanta or Baltimore.

May I ask what this "upgrade" means/gives you?

Is it upgraded to first class?

It cost us $69 from Asheville, NC to Orlando (each way). I've never flown 1st Class but those seats were huge! As another poster stated also included are two free checked bags. Also nicer snacks and adult beverages are free :cool1: as well as first to board/deplane. Best money ever spent!

OK - this might be a stupid question, but how do you book the upgrade?
when checking flight pricing, etc. just a few moments ago it gave Coach and Business Class - but the business class fares were way more than $49/ $69, etc. over the coach cost...

Any help is appreciated. DH is 6' 7" and I told him I'd look into the business class option for our next trip if it wasn't too expensive..

Thanks!

Book the coach fare and when you do your online check in at the 24 hour mark, it will ask you if you want to upgrade. That is where you do it and pay the additional 49-129. Make sure to do it at the 24 hour mark.

DH is 6'6 so I understand :) We actually didn't do it until we checked in - But - ours is a relatively small airport and if you really want it I wouldn't wait.

We took a taxi from our Disney resort back to MCO and there was a Airtran rep standing at a little podium right outside. He was able to do it right then and there for the return trip.

It bears repeating - well worth the money!

Rochester, NY to Orlando was $99 this December. But....it has been as low as $59 in the past.

does anyone know if I can just upgrade 1 or 2 people of my party to business class and have the others stay in coach? We were thinking of doing like the Home Alone movies and leaving the kids in coach while mom and dad flew up front...... ha hahahahahhahahhahahahha

Seriously though, can it be done or does it have to be everyone on your itinerary?

I was wondering the same thing...I figured that since two bags are free with the upgrade, that I could have all four bags be covered even though only two of us were in business class. I thought us girls could fly in business class on the way down and the guys could have it on the way back. :goodvibes

Ok, here are responses directly from Airtran. I had asked if I only upgrade to Business class on the first leg if the luggage would be free for the connecting flight as long as the first leg was the upgrade.

Dear Mr. Dudspizza,

Yes, the 1st and 2nd checked bags would be free in that situation, as long as you upgrade on the 1st segment, it will cover the connecting flight.

Business Class Customers: Fare Class: A, J, D, S, F and U (when UG is on 1st segment)
1ST -BAG FREE
2ND - BAG FREE

If I have failed to address all of your concerns, please let me know in a response to this message. We hope to have the opportunity to serve you on an AirTran Airways flight in the near future.

AND, I also asked if I could upgrade only 1 or two people on my itinerary.

Dear Mr. Dudspizza,

Thank you for your follow up question. You may upgrade only one passenger to Business Class, on an Itinerary of more than one. When checking in online, you would just select the person you would like to upgrade, and pay the fees only for that person. This may also be done at the Ticket Counter as well. Upgrades may be purchased within 24 hours of flight departure.

Please let us know if we can assist you further. Have a great day!
