I plan on just having carry ons for each of us but was wondering what else are we allowed? could my kids each bring a back pack also for over flow and video games on the way there? I know it said I could bring a purse so I was wondeirng what the difference would be. Is there a size limit on the back pack? I've never flown, sorry.

Each ticketed passenger is allowed one carry-on bag to be stowed in the overhead compartment (see your airline's website for specific size/weight limits) and one personal item such as a purse which must fit entirely under the seat in front of the passenger.

You can check the Airtran website, but if you are doing carry-ons; the bag must fit into the overhead compartment with the wheels facing the back of the overhead; you cannot turn it sideways.

The backpacks must fit under the seat safely; not half under one's feet or partially in the aisle.

We flew Air Tran in July and each child brought a carry on suitcase and stowed it in the overhead compartment. They each also brought their backpack with things to keep them occupied on the plane.

We just flew Airtran in July and both of my kiddo's had the backpacks with the string straps. They were both filled full with games, coloring supplies and each had a rolled up blanket and travel pillow in there as well. They still fit under the seats and had no problems.

I just copied this from the Air Tran site:

A carry-on bag must not exceed 24” long + 18” wide + 13” tall for a total combined linear measurement of 55 inches.

For a personal item, such as a briefcase, laptop, purse, or camera to fit under the seat in front of the customer, it must not exceed 17” long + 12” wide + 8.5” tall.

We both always take a carry and a backpack and have had no issues on Airtran flights. You will be fine.

I have been wondering about the backpacks as well....thanks to all of you for the info!!:)

we just got back on monday and used airtran and had a full size backpack as a carry on and we were fine. by full size i mean not a little one like smaller kids would carry. Like a normal school backpack. It fit nice under the seat in front on me.
