We're considering a trip to Vero Beach in Feb. Does Disney have a shuttle from the airport? Do we cab it? How far is the airport from Vero? Is the closest airport Orlando Intl? Can we manage without renting a car?

Thanks friends

It's about 50/50 between WPI and MCO to Vero. There are no shuttles from either. It's about a two hour drive from either airport to Vero. A cab would cost a fortune. most people rent a car, as there really isn't anything you can walk to from there, and there are only two restaurants and the bar. We didn't find the menus extensive at any of them, and the little store has high prices and small selection--so you'd want to be able to go to a market.

The closest airport is Melbourne, FL You will still need a car. From Orlando, it is about a 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive depending on traffic and which route you take.
There is very little to do in Vero. You cannot get to any of the other restaurants in town or in the nearby vicinity without a car. There are two restaurants at the resort but we were not too impressed with them. Keep in mind that the actual town of Vero Beach practically closes down at 6:00 PM. You will need to go off the island to find any restaurants that are open later.
There are also some outlets located back near the highway, about a 20 minute drive, but they also close early (about 8:30) and this is in early August.

We are in the NE too and are booked on Delta for Oct into Melbourne. The best rates were Sat-Sat and best flight times. We are paying 280/pp which is 30/pp more than Orlando. For the travel time saved and the great flights it was well worth it to us. There are lots of rental car options.

Right now I am looking at National standard size with some discounts for around $217 for the week.

The airport is quite small compared to Orlando from what I hear and easy to get to. So we're going to try it.

Anne or Jiminy14-is there a lot along A1A or where are we going to find a grocery store, fast food, maybe some light shopping and basic sightseeing? Does A1A go all the way to Daytona?TIA

Not sure if A1A goes to Daytona. After we left Vero, we drove to WDW along this route. Big mistake. Added at least an hour to our trip. We did stop at Ron Jon's in Cocoa Beach and saw the cruise ships but next time we'll take the highway.
I did not actually see any fast food restaurants near Vero. There weren't too many on A1A until you reached Cocoa Beach. Sections of A1A are very dark and woody. Most of the good restaurants are off the island. We did not visit a grocery store since we were only there for 4 days but I remember seeing a Super Walmart off the island.
There is a nice outlet shopping center back near the highway. It does close early (8:30 PM in the summer). There were also some chain restaurants and a Walgreens.
As for the town of Vero Beach itself, it closes up about 6:00. We never did get to see anything there because by the time we left the beach and got showered and dressed the heavens would open up with the most incredible thunderstorms you can imagine. We rarely were able to leave the resort before 7:00 because of the rain. If you can get there in the afternoon, there seemed to be a lot of neat little shops to visit.
Off the island is a great place to buy fresh squeezed orange juice and oranges. It's called Hale Groves and again, it close early. Your best bet is to get to it in the morning before you go to the beach.
If you have reserved a studio unit then ask for a corner room. These rooms are much larger than the regular studio with an extra long hallway/seating area that is removed from the sleeping area. They do not have oceanfront balconies but they do overlook the ocean with two big windows. The balconies are actually on the side. This is one of the nicest and largest rooms I have stayed in. Not too many people know about them so you should have a good chance at getting one.
Laundry is free at the resort but you do have to pay for detergent. The facilities are in the main building and are not very crowded. No bell services here. You park underground, find a luggage cart, and transport it yourself up to your room. Lounge chairs in prime spots at the pool go early. If you get there after 10:00, you might have a problem. People used to "reserve" their chairs by leaving towels and shoes on them, but I have heard that due to numerous complaints, the CMs are removing them after a certain length of time if no one is observed using the chairs.
If you like total relaxation, then you will love Vero. My two teenage DDs hated it there and are in no rush to return. There is a lot to do for the younger children but nothing for the teenagers.
Any other questions, just ask!

Forgot to mention bug spray. In the summer this is a necessity! The mosquitos are terrible and there are these little gnat-like bugs called "no-see-ums". They are called this because you don't see them until after they have bitten you!

Thanks for your replies. We had spent one night at VB a couple years ago just to see it in person. We were really only there for a few hours as we got up and left to check out HH for 1 night while driving home. It was a unique trip where we felt we could just get a taste to see if we ever wanted to return so we never got to explore at all. We are looking forward to a lot of down time and riding in both directions along the east coast. Thanks again.
