What is the best way to get from airport to Boardwalk since free service is no longer offered.

It depends what your needs are. Are you someone who prefers private car service? That’s one option. There are also buses - Mears Connect and Sunshine Flyer.
Some people use Uber or Lyft.

Also interested in this subject, as we plan to travel in May 2022 - looking for advice on options available since ME has stopped.

Motorized transport.

Seriously, I don't think anyone can say what the "best" method is because that can vary from person to person. But the current options off the top of my head are Mears Connect, Sunshine Flyer (soon), private care service, taxi, rideshare, or car rental

Best? Hire a town car service. Perhaps FL Tours, the sponsor of this section of the DIS?

Mears Connect - This is the Disney-approved replacement for DME and operated by the same company that used to operate DME

Mears Connect and Sunshine are approved in that Disney is allowing both to pick up and drop off on WDW property. Disney's signage is generic

@Wdloepp, To my knowledge, Disney hasn’t officially endorsed Mears Connect or any of the various providers of transportation between the airport and WDW.

I recall Disney communicating the new Mears Connect service through their official channels (website, reservations, etc.) when they communicated that DME was going away.. Also as stated by Lewisc above, Mears Connect is authorized by Disney to pick-up/drop-off at WDW resort hotel entrances, not many transportation companies are permitted to do this unless its a private car like Uber/Lyft or a cab..

I don’t remember Disney mentioning Mears Connect in their announcement, only that guests had many alternatives such as rideshare that were not available when DME began. I do remember Mears quickly announcing their new service in their response to Disney’s sudden announcement and then many months before details were announced. And apparently the Sunshine Flyer has gotten whatever authorization they might need to drop off and pick up at WDW resort hotel entrances too. I think it’s good that there will be competition, and I’m not sure that Disney wants to be seen endorsing one over the other. If they start including transportation via a specific company as an option with their vacation packages, then that’s an endorsement.
