Airport Security search tips (.... I was targeted at MCO!)

I was "pre-selected" by my airline to be completely searched at the security check-point. It was no big deal but I learned a couple of tips to pass along.

First of all, they politely informed me that the "ssss" on my Boarding Pass meant that the airline had chosen me for any number of reasons. I could have made a one-way ticket (nope), changed my ticket or itinerary (nope again; my whole family has had the same tix since January), or jsut because they needed to meet a quota (most likely). They "wanded" me and my shoes and then took everything out of my purse. The lady was always friendly and explained everything. This was also done in an open area, in view of everybody, and did not involve any removing of clothes (whew!).

Two things I learned:
1) She loved that I had most of my make-up and travel stuff in clear, ziplock bags. She said that it made the process twice as fast. She could look at it without taking the extra time to pull every item out.

2) When she was done, she used a special-shaped hole punch (which I WILL NOT describe to preserve the security of the system) to show the gate personnel that I was searched. She told me that, if that that punch was not on my Boarding Pass, the gate personnel are required to call the TSA to come to the gate and search me again. She said that I would definetly miss my plane because of the time required to find a free TSA agent and to get to the gate.

It only took 10 minutes and was not a big deal. The only flaw that I saw was that they asked me which was my bag, when it was obvious that our family had multiple bags and I could have easlily lied. I didn't lie but they did certainly did not question my selection either.

Hope this helps somebody.

Sure does, Claudia,
Thanks for sharing and I am happy to see that they are doing their jobs. Sorry for your delay, however. I think your attitude towards the whole thing was fantastic!!!! :)

I got this the last Monday when I flew out of MCO.

Now I had madea about 10 changes to the ticket so that could be why. I pack in the Eagle Creek packing cubes (since this was short trip I had a carry on and it went quickly.) Normally it would have gone faster since I check my luggage and just carry on my laptop.

Of course I am pretty good at this now. I automatically stand on the little feet and stick my arms out like a scarecrow!

It is interesting how different airports do the screening differently for the checked luggage. At Midway, you actually wait while they put it through the x-ray machine, and if it's okay, then you proceed to your gate. We've never had ours searched, but I imagine that you can wait and watch.
At MCO, they just take it and put it through after you leave, so you don't know if they searched it until you claim it later. They searched our garment bag once. That is the one hubby always worried about, because it is falling apart and is usually jerry-rigged with cable ties. They must have noticed because they taped it up good when they were done, so everything stayed together.
We are flying out for our next trip next week, and I FINALLY managed to convince hubby to get a new garment bag in case the next inspectors aren't so careful!
When we go through the security checkpoint with our carry-ons, one thing that seems to instigate a check is a dense package of batteries. Hubby always carries a battery brick, and they usually end up opening the bag to check it out. It's never a problem to bring it...we just know that there will be a little delay while they check the bag.

I think that the big electronic x ray machines are not yet working at MCO. I saw the one near SW and it was not on and they hand searched TONS of luggage (I would not be surprised if it was all of it!)
Also, Orlando's airport is going to be a logistical challange for those machines. At SW they were installing it on the other side of the hall (near the windows!) Here in Nashville, there was enought room to install them behind the check in counters and just move the counters.

Thanks all of you for posting this information. I will make double sure we don't take that last walk around WDW, instead head early to MCO on my next visit!

I am flying SWA, so now I am prepared!

I was searched in Manchester, NH and my son (7) was searched in Orlando. My biggest tip is to make sure you have clean socks on...When they ask you to take your shoes off having dirty socks would be quite embarrassing. Really though, both times the search took minimal amounts of time.

poohbear2,
Good point about the clean socks! Goes back to what "Mom" use to say about wearing clean underware. You never know!!

Good point, and I would add--Make sure you are wearing socks! My sister was wearing sandals for a trip to MN from CA last summer and had to send her shoes through the x-ray machine and walk through barefoot--ish, dirty floors!
