Airport security - digital cameras and film?

Ok, what's the deal with film through airport security. When is it safe for x-ray machine.

What about digital cameras and/or smart media disks?

Film is not safe in checked luggage, should be carry on only and I highly advise having it hand checked, REGARDLESS of what the security people say.
Digital media and cameras are totally safe in either carry on or checked, however, I would not put anything valuable in my checked luggage, so, I carry it on.
