Called AirMiles this morning and got the flights that I wanted when I wanted on the days I wanted and I got direct flights to the destination I wanted for travel in August! I was in shock! Usually when I call I have to compromise like flying on a different day or out of a different airport to get what I want, then the taxes and fees end up upping it anyway.
We wanted to go see my brother who just moved to Minneapolis area. (Plan on doing some Laura Ingalls Wilder stuff while out there). I was prepared for the - "no availability on those dates" speech when I called so I had researched other flight options, and had pretty well narrowed it down to flying out of Syracuse (with lousy flight times) for $306 US per person (so about $1500 US for the family). That would have meant a longer drive to Syracuse and hotel stay etc, but the flights out of Ottawa were like $590 Cdn per person (which is about $3,000 for our family).
Anyway, called and the AirMiles lady said she had five seats and a direct flight and the taxes/fees for the five of us was $565. It cost 8,500 airmiles.
We had about given up on AirMiles but now my faith is restored. The funny thing is when I asked about renting a car or minivan that would be 4400 or 5500 airmiles... makes no sense... so we will rent the car ourselves and save the remaining airmiles for another trip.
Thought I would post here since I know AirMiles seat avaialbility is always a topic of discussion/grumbling/praise - depending on your experience at the time. So - for today - praise for AirMiles!

P.S. Anyone been to Minnessota or South Dakota before?
