Airline Ticket Name Change

Glad I amuse you so much.

For everyone else trying to be helpful, I really wouldn't bother. He already got all of these suggestions, so he is just wasting your time:

OMG, You don't have time to answer my question but you have time to research my threads, post to reprimand me and proceed to post and warn other poor unsuspecting would be helpful message board posters...Really?? You have to ask why that is funny??

If you must know (and apparently you do being so busy and all), I posted on the budget board because not everyone reads all the boards and this is a budget/financial question too. The people on this board are extremely nice and helpful (pixie dust exists here). There are alot of crotchety...ummm "folks" like yourself over on the transportation board (not everyone, I have gotten and provided great info there too :) ) - Lighten up my friend, this is a message board, a Disney message board no less...people are allowed to post and help each other out.

Oh btw I also posted on Flyertalk (thank you PlutoPony for the suggestion :)) You may want to go over there and warn those folks as well that I have gotten some answers over here...Assuming you have the time...

You probably can't even do that. Once you purchase a ticket in someone's name they own the ticket. So technically, your ex still owns the ticket and can do whatever she wants with it.
Not with ALL airlines... On Southwest anyone and I mean anyone with the name of the ticket holder and the confirmation # can cancel the ticket. A travel voucher will be issued for the amount of the ticket and can be used by anyone. This is, of course, for nonrefundable tickets on SW. So if I booked a ticket for DH and myself and then want to cancel his, I can. I will then get a travel voucher equal to the price of the ticket. I could use that travel voucher to purchase another ticket for anyone. Of course the new ticket would be purchased at the prevailing price. Another reason I like SW, no cancellation fees. :goodvibes

and I do realize OP is talking about AT, but PP stated ex wife would own ticket and not necessarily true...that's why I used SW as an example because I knew that's not the case with them. The person who purchased the ticket owns it...

There is a way around this. Since your 14 year old daugthers friend wont have a ID. She can go saying she is your wifes name!!!

Won't work...besides not being a good idea... when you buy the ticket you have to enter a Birthday. TSA will see a birthdate of someone over the age of 18 and will require ID...

My point, before your "clever" responses was to see if you had tried the previous suggestions (your post rang a bell). If you had, it was time to try the second tier suggestions rather than simply repeating suggestions that you had already tried. It seemed pointless to repeat suggestions.

Then you became a jerk.

I've never seen a boarding pass with a birth date on it, so I'm not sure that the TSA (those at security) would know the age of the person for whom the ticket was purchased.

A problem could/would occur when checking in at the counter. However, I often check in on line and never see an agent at the counter (if I travel with only carry on or through an airport with self-serve baggage check). Even if there were bags to check, the bags could be checked by one of the other travelers and the child using the ticket could just avoid the counter. Depending on the number of bags, this might involve paying larger baggage fees than needed (i.e. if someone needs to check two bags to cover the "extra" one), but may still be a cheaper option.

Not something I'd be willing to risk (flying under someone else's name), but it could be done without too much trouble,I would think.

Wonder if there are any 14 year olds on terrorist watch lists...

There was an article on CNN about a little girl probably like 6-7 years old that was on a no fly list and she was not allowed to board her flight. So probably yes...

Thank you crashbb, I stand corrected. You are correct. It's not on boarding pass. But they did ask for all ID's for anyone over the age of 17 at the counter to check in for the flight. My husband was not with me at the counter when I checked us in, but they did want his ID (which I had). If the agent is paying close attention to the DOB, the agent could close this loop hole for the party flying. If they aren't paying close attention you 'may' get away with it. I, personally, would not want to take that chance, but that is just me.

I think you have given all of the circumstances necessary to 'cheat' using the ticket, but I'd be a nervous Nellie trying to do it and then TSA would really wonder what "I" was up to!! :rolleyes1

Your question has been answered multiple times, on two different threads at different times here and likely on the much more blunt flyertalk by now, too. It looked familiar to crashbb so, yes, that poster chose to refresh his/her memory.

Crotchety? Hardly. Factual? You betcha. Transportation is WAYYYY too serious an issue to be sweet and sprinkle pixie dust. Would you like us to tell you, "Oh, sure, go ahead - lie to the airline, ignore their policies, cheat, whatever you want to get your way. When they give you a hard time, start yelling 'do you know who I am' or 'do you know how much I paid' or threaten to call your lawyer or the Attorney General or the news..."

Have you ASKED AirTran, or checked their website? I see several posters have suggested lying-by-omission to the airline. Is that what you want to do? Have you considered the consequences - having to purchase a VERY expensive last-minute round-trip or return ticket for the friend if you get to one of the airports and that ruse doesn't work?

Flyertalk doesn't need to be warned; their members are intelligent. Two have told you pretty much 'no', one of those also suggested you attempt to deceive the airline, and one pointed out what a bad idea that was.

I must admit, I'm confused why, after the airline told you it can't be done and an experienced air traveler on the "dreaded" :rolleyes1: Transportation board told you what steps to take, you feel you'll get a better/different answer on a different board :confused3

kaytieeldr - Seriously, you're post right here is the transportation board in a nutshell. And yes there are very knowledgable and factual people there and I value everyone's opinion. Did I ever said I wanted to cheat? Did I say I was going to lie? Did I ever said I wanted to fight? Do people have opinions about good ideas and bad ideas? Should people be allowed to openly express those opinions right or wrong? Do people sometimes have life experiences that may help the situation I am in? Does posting in multiple places increase the chance of finding someone who might have experienced something different? Are company websites ever vague and unclear with documentation about policies or procedures? Are there sometime legitimate exceptions to rules and regulations? Do airline customer service representitives sometimes have incorrect information?

That is why we post on message boards. On MOST message boards, people give life experiences and examples and suggest ideas and opinions. On the transportation board everyone knows everything about everything and god forbid you ask a question and get a different opinion. In this case, yes, it doesn't look like I have any legit course. Oh well. It can't hurt trying to ask on a message board - that is what it is here for...I get there is no pixie dust over on the transportation board. That is the motto. Let's keep that motto on that board.

crashbb - I apologize if you thought I was being a jerk. But thank you for your later follow up suggestion/opion. I do appreciate that. Next time, just post your suggestion/opinion and things don't have to get snippy...:)

Yes if you have the same name as someone on the no fly list it doesn't matter what your age is you will get special attention.

Just to throw this out when my son flies (he is under 18) he has been asked his name and age by both TSA and the gate check agent at different times.
