Airline seating with a disability

It seems like I read somewhere that a person with a disability has the right to sit next to a companion if necessary during a flight. It seems like I also read that a child under 5 would be seated with a companion during a flight.

Does anyone know where I could find this information? Am I just making this up??

The reason I am asking is that when we booked our flights on Airtran, there were no seats together. I am planning to check-in online 24 hours before we deaprt, but I just want to know if I have any additional options if there is still nothing together.

I would call the airline and explain. They should have no problem moving things around. I've done this several times and not needed to mention any sort of legislation or anything like that. Especially if you're flying with kids, it shouldn't be a problem since they wouldn't want a kid separate from an adult.

I just called and the agent was able to book our seats together! What a relief! I told her that I had tried to book them myself but that there were none. She said that they had some that they could book for us by calling.

I'm so relieved because that is one less thing to stress over!
