Airline related question (last min. flights)

If you were to go to the airport w/o a ticket hoping to get on a flight ( I guess it would be considered standby) do you get a deal on the price?

Most major airlines would sell you a full fare ticket. Southwest might be different, but I've never flown them and don't know what they'd do. I'd recommend going online and buying a ticket before going to the airport... you may be able to get some deal that way.

I tried it once and tickets are like triple the amount if you would of booked at least 1 month out. There used to be tickets for people that had to fly home for a funeral, but airlines cut that out awhile ago.

Yes, the price would be outrageous. You could try the airline's website and see how much a ticket would cost for that same day. You might be surprised. I tried it once when considering an impromtu trip and it was ver reasonable to fly out that same day.

My DH has done it for business. Very high prices....and security really checks you out thoroughly.

Unfortunately, airlines have never taken Economics 101. Economic theroy would suggest that if the plane is taking off without being full then if there happens to be anyone standing around the gate that wants to go where that plane is going you should sell the ticket for whatever they are willing to pay. The extra person will probably not effect fuel costs and the only incremental cost might be a coke and a bag of peanuts. So anything they are willing to pay over the cost of the coke and peanuts you should take and let them get on the plane. Reality is if they did this sort of thing hundreds of people would hang out at the airport looking for cheap flights to Hawaii, so they charge more to discourage people from trying it.
