It's not really the airlines. It's a Federal government regulation, enforced by government security agents. I would suspect it will remain in force until US troops are not involved in any armed conflicts with any other countries.

I would assume it will stay in place forever. The TSA is not the type of agency to admit that their "security" measures aren't effective. And since all they can do is "react" to threats, please join me in praying that terrorists never discover "explosive clothing" (just imagine....)
