Airfare Costs

We are planning on going to WDW 6/9-17 2006. However, we have not booked any airplane tickets yet due to cost. (nor have we booked rooms - we are hoping for an AP discount) Costs to go from our local airport to MCO is anywhere from $900-1055 for 2 people Due to the lovely Wright amendment, we would have to drive 4 hours to Hobby Airport in Houston to get halfway decent airfare. Dallas is closer but you can't do a direct flight & then the costs rise to go from Dallas to Houston. My stress level will no airplane ticket and no room booked rises a little everyday. However, the concern/need to save money keeps me from booking those expensive airline tickets and I have been watching the prices for almost 7 months.

Has anyone else gotten to about 3 months out with no tickets?
Do airlines wait until after spring break before they start reducing ticket prices?

Any help or suggestions would be a great help to me and my pocketbook.
Thanks.

Try signing up for newsletters, etc from airlines. I had given up hope for an April Florida trip because airfare was over $700 for the two of us. Well, I am signed up for a newsletter through one of the airlines and they sent me info about a sale they are having. I have read that buying tickets within 3 weeks of your flight is going to be the most expensive but I don't know if that is correct.

I'm not sure exactly where you are located, but I saw that American Airlines offers a direct flight from DFW to MCO for around $250.00 round trip / per person.

You wont be able to do Southwest due to the Wright Amendment without having to either go to Houston or fly from Dallas and catch a connecting flight.. Your best bet is American or Airtran.. I just did a search from DFW to MCO (Orlando) and the total price with taxes is 502.20 on Airtran-- Thats nonstop!! I also just tried American and picked the first 2 times listed and the price is a total of 782.20.. again nonstop!!.. You might be able to work with the times of the day on American and get some better pricing.. We are going to WDW in 2 weeks and flying with Airtran and going nonstop and got roundtrip for 4 for less than $900.. Not too shabby...

We are traveling the same dates as you :wizard: , from O'Hare/Chicago, and we got $276pp on a Group rate of 10! I'm not happy about it, but relieved that flights are done. Of course Texas, or any other state, will be different. Just wanted to share our price with you to help. We're flying Ted/United, which also participates in the Magical Express. :yay:

Let us know what you end up with! :thumbsup2

BTW, what's the Wright amendment? :confused3 Haven't heard about this.

Oh, everyone's going to HATE me! We're going in April, a family of four, for the low price of...............free!!! Well, actually, about $40 total in some sort of tax, but we're using SWA Rapid Rewards tickets. zi p a dee do dah.......... :teeth:

Proof that politicians can be bought. If you want the details, do a google search.

vhoffman - I am sooo jealous. DH hates to fly from DFW but I guess to save money he might need to get happy. We usually fly from Shreveport but will try and keep an open mind. I am going to sign up for newsletters. Thanks for the tips.

We waited until about 70 days out before buying airfare.

We're going April 28 - May 6. Flights out of Hartford were no less than $250. We kept holding out and eventually bought at $283 / person. Painful, but I have an AP that's expiring the second week in May so our dates aren't flexible. The NEXT Day flights jumped to $778 / person :faint

I still don't know why the airfare is so expensive this time around ...

I would be really tempted to travel each way over two days....

For instance, leave Friday afternoon after work (say 6:00) and drive to Houston. Stay in a cheap hotel that will let you park there and offer shuttle service to the airport for the week and fly out first thing in the morning. Do the same thing coming home. Four hours isn't bad in a car - four hours plus the plane trip may be too much in a day.

I feel your pain. My sister is in Fargo and drives five hours to the Twin Cities to fly inexpensively.

I just found you a flight on Airtran for $502.20 for both. Leave 6/9, return 6/17. I was checking out Airtran last night, as an alt. to AA. I also live in DFW. If you want to change your dates, you can fo 6/7 to 6/15 for only $374.20. Check Airtran today. When you get on the Home page, click on the $39 special and go from there.
