Airfare, Anyone done this?

So, I am looking at airfare for our trip. I am WAY late booking it. Unfortunately I had no choice, I had to wait for my bonus to come in so I didn't dip into savings.

Anyway, we usually fly AirTran. My problem is the flights are expensive right now. I can get one way really cheap, but the flight home is crazy!!

So, I was thinking, couldnt I just do a one way ticket down on AirTran and then do the flight back on another airline? I am hoping the prices will change and I can do all AirTran, but if not, this would work, right?

Anyone ever done this?

Yes I do this quite often. there is not rule that says you buy a round trip ticket on any airline. I have done the two separate one ways for price and also for convenient scheduling.

Yeah it should work fine, more flexible as well. We are driving next trip to save the $ but if we were flying I would give that method a try.

I do this frequently. When I planned a trip for our extended family, we all flew down on Southwest. On the way back, some took Southwest, some took Airtran because of the flight times. No issues at all.

I always book one way these days. Unlike the old rule of round trip being cheaper, you're now shown the price of each part of your trip. So there's no price difference in booking one way rather than round trip.

Look on Southwest too. Their fares are usually comparable, depending on where you're flying from. But they seem to have the same markets as Airtran.

I would check Southwest if they are in your airport, and also I like to use kayak.com to find some of the better prices.

I only buy one-way tickets whether it's on the same airline or different airlines, it really doesn't matter.

What's the problem? If the airfare is too expensive to get back home, then just stay in WDW!!

Sure do! We did this last year when we went to Puerto Rico, just booked them as one way trips, went off without a hitch.

Yes you can definately book a one way on one airline and then another way on another airline. In fact, I have even went as far as booking a one way on one air tran from an upstate ny airport and then flying into ft. lauderdale airport then on my way home I took a one way on jetblue from west palm beach airport (We were in miami and took a train for a few bucks to west palm beach) into the same upstate ny airport. Only I usually fly out of Long Island, JFK or LGA. But that was the only way to fly the cheapest. It was a bit crazy but it saved us money.

Definitely works and people do that a lot. Good luck!

You can certainly do this. The one downside is if you have to change your flight. Most airlines (not Southwest) charge a $150 change fee per ticket. If you need to change, it will potentially cost you $300 instead of $150

We do this frequently. In fact this year we are flying down Air Tran and flying home Southwest. The beauty in this is if we decide after we have booked to extend out trip a couple of days we can change our flight home without a big penalty and sometimes you save some dough for future flights!
