Air Vent blowing hot air......is it freon?

I haven't been feeling well today so I am laying in my bed. Directly above me is the air conditioner vent. Well just a few minutes ago it blew two puffs of air that I could smell if that makes sense.......they smelled and felt hot.

I went and turned the whole unit off but I really need to go to Wal-Mart and now I'm a little nervous about leaving the house. Since I turned the unit off about 10 minutes ago it hasn't happened again.

Any ideas and would you feel okay leaving the house?

I just asked my hubby, and he said don't worry about freon, it's not used anymore.

He's suggesting you check the motor and whatever it is that moves the air, ie, the fan or blower for the furnace or what have you. It could be that the motor is starting to fail, which could be causing arcing, which would send out heat and a funny smell.

He says you should get it checked out soon, just because it could be a fire hazard if you keep using it and there's an electrical problem.

Thank you so much!!!!! DH said he will check everything when he gets home but that it's okay to leave the house as long as I've turned the unit off. It hasn't done it again so I'm going to go ahead and go to Wal-Mart.

We have had more air problems this year. We have three units and just last week something had to be replaced on our downstairs unit. Now the upstairs one is acting weird. The only one that isn't acting weird is the one in the side apartment that my mom lives in...........thankfully since we love to be really cold we have a nice brand new window unit in our bedroom so turning off the upstairs unit won't be a problem.
