Air Travel and Purchase Potential

My thoughts now are to buy a minimal point resale at DGC because I'd like the 11 month booking advantage. Then getting more points by buying a SSR or OKW resale due to their lower costs. Then transfer or combine points to use at DGC with the 11 month window.

Is that a good strategy?

It's hard to get a resale for DGC because Disney ROFR's most of them.

You can't use SSR or OKW points at 11 months at DGC. Any transferred points retain their home resort. You'd have to bank and borrow to get a larger number of points for your stay. You could try to combine points at 7 months out, but that could be hard.

1. Let's pretend a cruise will cost 500 points for a room with 4 passengers using your DVC points. If you then go and try book the same room but pay cash, the same room costs $3200 for 4 passengers. I would rather rent the 500 points for $5000 and then paying cash for the cruise and have $1800 to spend on other things. You could also just use your points for the cruise and never mind trying to rent your points instead. They are your points and use them however you want. Some people would rather have the convenience of just using the points for the cruise instead.

2. Explained in previous reply.

3. I donot mind staying in studios to stretch points out. My family is just me, wife and 6yr old son. He has no problem sleeping on the pull out sofa. It is more like a hotel room than a suite though. But for our past trip it was either stay in a studio for 14 nights or about 7 nights in a 1 bedroom. We decided we would rather have a longer trip in a studio. I have to admit though once you have stayed in a 1br or bigger it is pretty hard to stay in a studio again. That is where addontitis kicks in for me.

I definitely agree that from a strictly financial standpoint, renting out points and then paying for a cruise will almost always be the best option.

However, being involved in renting out your points is not a situation that all DVC members are comfortable with. There are drawbacks and risked involved and anyone considering DVC with this intent should at least spend the time looking into how it works so they can decide if it will be something for them.

I know personally, I will never rent out points to strangers because I am just not comfortable with the whole process.

Points never change their home resort status. So, if you want to be able to use points at VGC at the 11 month mark, they must be VGC points. Points from a different resort can only be used at the 7 month mark.

Aarrgh.

Thanks Bill and Sandisw for the info.

Back to the drawing board.

Hi from another Hawaii DVC owner with a similar family structure ... it is me, DH, and our DS4. We bought VGC because we go there every year, and we usually meet up with friends so we get a 1 or 2 bedroom. We have not had success with getting rooms for extra nights past the 7 month mark. For us we will be going to the Land every year anyways, usually combined with a trip to see friends and family on the mainland so airfare was something we were accustomed to. If you want to stay at a few resorts: BLT, VGC, BCV, it does that one needs to own there and book early! (I like to make my reservations with some 'room for error' then buy plane tickets a few days before/after [whatever works and is reasonably priced within our time-off from work] then we stay offsite or DLH for the first/last few nights, head down to San Diego or up to Magic Mountain, etc.)
Unfortunately VGC is sold out right now with a waiting list and those who have been trying to buy contracts have been getting ROFR'ed so if VGC points are what you want, its probably a good idea to get on the waiting list soon ...
Also, just a side note ... Aulani is a large resort that has much higher MF's than VGC, so you'll also be saving some $$ there by buying in Cali or WDW as opposed to closer to home ...

Awesome. Thanks for the insight from fellow Hawaii person. So you bought from DGC for the 11 month window? I'm leaning towards doing that as well. I figure that Aulani will be easier to get 7 months out then DGC will be to get 7 months out.

Is the wait list thing to buy direct from Disney? I see some DGC listings for resale on http://www.dvc-resales.com/dvclisting.cfm. I'll probably wait and look for something good there first. If you buy from Disney is the price comparable to the resale price on dvc-resale? Or is it way higher?
