Air Tran..seat assignment question

Actually, I am flying out of Indy in September and paid $18 (3 x $6) each way so we could all sit together. When I looked a couple of weeks ago, there were less than 10 seats left on our outbound flight and maybe 12 on the return flight not taken....so I would have to disagree with your comment regarding 90% of the seats being available. Just my observations...

Us too! Flying out of Indy in Sept and there weren't 20 seats left!

I've heard that when you're buying the cheap seats on Airtran, the website automatically blocks out many choices of seats. Try pretending like you're buying regular coach fares and you'll see the choices of seats open up, esp. the seats near the front.
Not fair really but true.

DSIL and I were just talking about that. We noticed that there were a lot of just the middle seats taken and that the seats on either side were open! :headache: :confused3

Still I really shouldn't complain. We got our return flights for Nov for only $54. Even with seat fees it was $60. It's still so outrageously cheap.
I couldn't flap my own wings at that price. :lmao: 'course I have no wings...

Airtran blocks out the middle seat on one side because they fly two aircraft 1 with a 3-3 configuration and 1 with a 2-3 configuration, as they don't assign the plane type when they open up flights they just block that seat so no one can select it in case the configuration is the 2-3 plane

I always pay to me it is just part of the flights cost. Plus my girls will be 4 and 20 months at time of tavel. I know they would flip out if they had to sit with someone they didn't know.

I just used kayak.com to get to the airtran flights that I wanted and it DID work that I was able to get seat assignments through Airtran for FREE. Yay! You start with yakak.com but it sends you directly to Airtran to book so there are no hassles like when using expedia or orbitz to book. It's really the same as going to Airtran to book directly other than NO seat fees being charged.

Thank you everyone for your opinions on this. I actually made our seat assignments this morning before coming on here. There weren't many seats left and I did not want to be in the very back due to the noise and the pain my DD was in during our last flight. So I grabbed two rows (25&26) and I got rows 15&16 for our flight back. It was $72, but now I can rest easy and not worry about it. BTW...I wasn't complaining about the cost. I was simply saying that I wish I could use that money towards something else. Yes, we did afford a Disney vacation this year, but that does not mean that I just like to throw money around. I budget very carefully and pay cash (well, debit card)....we don't use charge cards. So, yes I did spend a ton of money on a vacation, but that doesn't mean I don't try to save some where I can (we will not be drinking $3 a bottle water). We are a family of six on one income. We make it happen and cut corners were we can. It just happens that this wasn't one of the corners that I decided to cut. This is my three youngest boy's first flight ever. I don't know how they will react, so they will be with me. Anyway, thanks to everyone for responding. I so wish I would have known about kayak before I booked. I booked March...or whenever it was the dates opened. My sister booked a few weeks later and then told me about kayak..lol. Then AFTER I did the seat assignment today, I came on here and saw the $25 discount on the budget board...lol. Oh well, it's done..it's over with. Now, I am off to call Disney....paying off entire trip today!!! Have a great day everyone!
