Does anyone know how much the seat assignment fee is for Air Tran? When I check the website it states, "you can pick your seats before check-in for a small fee." Wondering what that "small fee" is. Thanks!

The last time we flew AirTran it was 8/2011. There was a range of fees from $6.00 to $20.00. It just depended where you chose to sit by row. We always chose the $6.00 seats. There are 5 of us. It was $30.00 each way. The seat choices were fine and we were guaranteed to be together.

I just booked a flight for November through Air Tran and paid $6 per seat each way. We have regular coach seats. I do believe there were higher costs for higher priority seating, but I actually prefer the back of the plane.

I believe it was 6 for basic seats, something like 12 for priority and 20 for exit row?

The last time I flew them, which was last Sept the fees were like $20.00 for exit row seats, $15.00 for the first few rows after first class, $13.00 for the next few rows, then the rest were $6.00. The higher priced seats $20.00, $15.00, and $13.00 guarantee you boarding zone 1 (if you prepurchase them). If those seats are available at the 24 hour mark, you can choose them for free, but you will be in boarding zone 7, instead of boarding zone 1. I've seen people argueing with the gate agent that they should be in boarding zone 1, because they chose those seats. The GAs tell them that if you prepay for those more expensive seats, you get boarding zone 1, but if you choose them for free at the 24 hour mark, you get the last boarding zone.

I hope this is true. I paid $13 to select our seats near the front of the plane, but I became concerned about if there would be space for our carry-on when I found out they board the plane back to front. I thought I read somewhere that priority boarding was an additional $10.

It doesn't look like anything has changed. I just went online to check and acted like I was going to book a flight. (As of last Nov Air Tran no longer flies out of my home airport in Dallas, so had to use a different home airport, so chose Atlanta to Orlando), but when I got to the part where I could choose my seat, it showed the different prices when you clicked on them and just below the diagram of the airplane was a block that showed the seats in row 12-16 were either $15.00 or $13.00 and said 'Zone 1' 'First to board' (on the flight I checked rows 10-11 were already full, so row 12 was the first I could choose).

Thanks for doing that :) I feel much better now. Even thought each person is allowed 1 carry on, we usually have only 1. Just a few things we would need if luggage did not make it promptly and some things to entertain DD. In fact, in the past I have just used a duffle bag and put it under the seat. :thumbsup2

You should always have an under the seat bag if you have kids for their stuff. Do not put their entertainment or snacks in the overhead compartment in case you have a flight that they never turn the seatbelt sign off for and you can't get up to get anything. My kids always have their own backpack just for these things.

That is also why you should never take the bulkhead with a baby, you can't keep anything down and within reach.

Good advice given here.

Also, the last AirTran flight I took there were several people that had to check their carry on bags because they wouldn't fit. Since they charge per bag, it seemed people were bringing the biggest carry on they could find. We only bought the backpacks that could fit under the seat. We don't like carrying on a lot on the plane. It's hard enough getting two little ones through security with a carseat and stroller, nevermind all the bags too.

If you hover over the seat, I believe, it will tell you what the fee is. For those wondering, yes, they will split up a parent and child if you do not pay ahead. Well, they don't, the parent did when they chose not to pay the seat fee.

We stopped bringing the carry on bag that was required to go in the overhead. It started to get a little stressful worrying if there would be room for the bag--even on Southwest not paying the bag fee. We got decent size/quality backpacks that fit perfectly under the seat. On the flight down, no issues. On the flight back, if you have souvenirs and there is extra space in over head bin you have room for the bags or backpack and still room under your seat. Works great!
