It's very difficult for someone not familiar with bipolar and psychotic episodes to know what they would or should do when one happens. This summer, my (bipolar) mother had a psychotic episode and was convinced she had to slit her dog's throat. Were we justified in taking the knives away? Am I justified in not letting her babysit her grandkids, even though she would love to?
I feel bad for the wife since she "made" the guy fly. I'm sure she had no idea he was going to do what he did. If it were my mom, there's no way I would blame the marshal, having seen first hand just how bipolarity can affect one's reality.

to you and your mom.
