Air Conditioning... What Do You Keep YOURS At?

It depends on who you ask. DH thinks it should be 76-78 in the summer. I am more a 74 girl. Anything lower than that and the thing never stops running and is difficult to maintain in NC.

Basically, we play dueling AC control.....we each adjust it every time we walk down the hall :rotfl:

Ours is set at 76 right now. New house, so I'm scared of what the electric bill is going to be! If it's not that bad, I'll lower it to 74. Last month's bill was $119 and we only ran the air for like 2 days, so I'm thinking it may go up to 78! :scared1:

I like to keep it about 75 during the day and 70 at night. for some reason I can't sleep when it is too hot but if it is too cold during the day I freeze!

It took 8 years of marriage to settle on those three numbers.
Hehe.... I know that score. Funny, that -- we're discussing service contracts in another thread, and some folks (perhaps unmarried folks, or folks who's spouse just agrees to whatever they want) seemed to be unable to accept that marital peace plays into decisions like this.

We don't use it. We used to have a couple of window units but our new house is close enough to the water and gets such a fabulous cross-breeze through the great big windows that we didn't bother putting them in last year at all. We do have ceiling fans in the upstairs bedrooms and in the office that we run when we're in those rooms.

Our AC runs from March until mid Nov. I can't stand for the house to be uncomfortablely hot. We keep the AC set at 73 and the heat 68-70 in the winter.

74 if I set it, 72 if DH does.

The problem is, my house doesn't have seperate zones, so to get it really cool enough in the upstairs bedrooms, you have to make it almost too cool on the main floor and downright chilly in the basement rooms!

I try to keep the AC at 73 during the summer, but I usually have to turn in down even more at night. I cannot stand to be hot while trying to sleep, and the bedrooms are on the second floor so it is always hotter up there. I would use the ceiling fan, but my DH hates the breeze it creates. Last night I woke up at 4 am sweating, so I turned the fan on. My DH was bundled up under the quilt, and I was sweating! In the winter I keep the heat at 68-69 degrees.

I can't imagine setting the AC to 78 or 80 like some people -- I would be the grumpiest, sweatiest, whiniest person in the work at those temperatures!

You took the words right out of my mouth. One of my neighbors keeps her AC on 78 (by her husband's decree) and I find it so uncomfortable as to not even be worth the bother.

Our AC is at 72-73, heat 67 daytime, 63 while sleeping.

Depending on the humidity, anywhere from 65-71.

its on at 77 this time of the year, I really hate to turn it on in the winter but have to when it gets down to freezing and then its on at 68

I finally won the on or off what temp arguments since DH is OverTheRoad truckerand its just me and the dogs :thumbsup2

If I'm just sitting around not doing much, about 75-76.
If I'm up and doing stuff, about 71.

When we leave the house for the day, we turn it up to 77-78.

I think I've won the award for hottest so far! Keeping it at 80 seems to be higher then most here. Actually I usually don't even turn it on until it gets into the upper 80s.

We only have window units now, we broke down a few days ago and put one in the family room and one in each bedroom. It was literally 90 degrees upstairs in our bedrooms.

The kids rooms are set at 68/70 if needed, which is usually above 80 during the day.

Ours is set at 65 at night if needed.

The family room is at 67 but we are lucky if gets down below 75 and that's fine.

We pretty much keep it between 74 and 77 year round. In the summer I can handle warmer during the day, but can't sleep at night. In the winter, I usually have it warmer during the day.

We have a programmable thermostat that we never bothered to change when we bought the house. We just kept the sellers' original settings:

For summer, it's at 78 during "at home and awake" hours (6-8am, 4-10pm), 82 during the night (we have a ceiling fan so that helps) and 85 from 8am-4pm.

I hate being hot and would set it lower, but our A/C is about 20 years old and probably not the most efficient of things ever. I don't want to overwork it.

74

Heating is included in our building for all units and set by the landlord. Sometimes it can be 78, other times 70.

We usually keep the ac at 78 during the day and 76 at night. However, I have a feeling that it will be kept cooler than that this summer since I'm due at the beginning of August and am already hot a lot of the time (which is completely abnormal for me!) and we've only had a few days of really hot weather thus far.

In the winter we usually keep the heat at around 64 during the day and 60 at night. Now that we'll have a baby this winter, I imagine we'll be keeping it warmer than that- not looking forward to the increase in the gas bill.
