Air Conditioning... What Do You Keep YOURS At?

I keep it just under 70 year round. between 65-69. I might drop it to 60-64 when I'm sleeping though.

I hate being hot. Today its 90 degrees outside and the thermostat is at 66.

I can't imagine setting the AC to 78 or 80 like some people -- I would be the grumpiest, sweatiest, whiniest person in the work at those temperatures!

We keep both the upstairs and downstairs ACs at 78 during the summer and its nice and cold. Really. I can't imagine dropping the air to 72 or lower. For one, the air would never turn off ($$$) and for two, it would be freezing.

AC - 86 during the day when no one (and no pet) is home, 78 at night although sometimes I sneak it down.

Heat - 62 during the day and 64-68 when we're home although sojmetimes she sneaks it up.

I keep the AC between 80 and 85. If its more humid, I put it more to 80, sometimes down to 78. If it's less humid, I put it for about 85. I use ceiling fans also, so it feels cooler than what the thermostat says.

Heat? I don't remember what I had it at....maybe 70 or so, but I don't use it much.

I think I've won the award for hottest so far! Keeping it at 80 seems to be higher then most here. Actually I usually don't even turn it on until it gets into the upper 80s.

I think my Mom thinks we're the worst parents ever, since our kids live in a house that's 80 in the Summer and only 62-64 in the Winter. :rotfl:

I don't touch the thermostat. Keeping marital peace.

AC 76
Heat 70

But here in northwest Florida, AC is required even during the winter months...to control the humidity. You can go from running the heat one day, to switching back over to AC the next.

All depends on which way the wind is blowing...if it's out of the south (blowing in from the Gulf) it's going to be more humid.

I think I was in 3rd or 4th grade when we finally got a window unit AC....I'm not sure how we survived. It was a BIG day when my dad finally decided it was time to shut the windows and crank up the AC:banana:

I still don't understand folks who decide when to use AC based on the date, and not the temperature.

We have mega humidity here, so 75 in the day, 74 overnight, and up to 77 when we leave for a few hours. You don't want a lot of humidity to build up inside.

Those of you that can keep yours set higher probably don't have the humidity issue we face. The A/C pulls it out of our house, you can see the water coming out of it in the little pipe thingie outside.

We just got a new A/C/furnace last month and a new thermostat. Got 3 ductworks replaced too. I need to program the thermostat now that I knew what is comfortable with the new unit. It runs less than our old unit. 16 seer vs a 10.

ETA:I see stevenpensacola and I were posting about the same time about the humidity issue!

It's ALL about the humidity.

During the fall/winter, we get these cloudy days where the temp may be in the 60's outside...with humidity to match. These are the days when you've got to bump down the thermostat for the AC to come on to bring down the humidity.

I've been in church on days like this...and it will get so stuffy, especially after everyone has been singing...actually helps your prayer life...

"Lord, please let the AC kick on"

We really try not to use our AC unless it's over 88 degrees or so. I love having the windows open and feel all closed in when the air condition is running. When we do have it on we set it at 76 but it also happens to be in the coolest part of the house so it's probably at least 80-82 in the bedrooms.

In the winter we have our heat at 69 when we're home and 62 when we're not. We love our programmable thermostat!

When we turn on our air, we keep it around 69-74 (70's during the day, but sometimes lower at night). We have a two story home and the air does not cool the upper level as well as the lower, so we tend to bump it lower to effectively cool the upper level. If it is warm, but not humid, I can handle not having the air on. Today is supposed to be in the mid-80's but the humidity is low, so the house stays comfortable. Our evening temps have been nice too, so we sleep with the windows open and a fan propped into the window to blow the cool outside air in. I love sleeping in a cool room. As soon as the humidity blows in around here, the air stays on in our household. We tend to run a dehumidifier all summer long, in our (unfinished) basement to help control the dampness.

I'm at work now and it's 73 in the thermostat area and pushing 80 in the reception area.

You should get your system balanced. It really should not be like that! They can fix it with dampers if need be.

Same here! Heat one day, A/C the next. Humidity is key.

We have a programmable thermostat, so we let the house get warm when we're not home. But when we're home it's generally 74 degrees when we're awake and 68 when we're asleep. I just can't sleep if I'm hot!

In winter, we usually heat up to 72 or 73 when we're home, then let it get down to 65-ish at night when we're asleep.

We keep ours at 70*.

DH is a butcher and works in refrigeration all day, so he is always "burning up" at home.

I know! Especially the poster that said they keep their air at 65 ~ in Arizona!!

Can you imagine coming out of 110 temps into 65 degrees???

This is a huge argument for DH and me every spring, and I always lose. :confused3 He is cold natured and I am hot natured. He sets the thermostat at 74 during the summer and 70 during the winter. I think it should be 70 year 'round! If I am up working and getting really hot, I will lower it to 70-72, but otherwise it's normally set at 74*.
