anyone know how to buy one of these, I pulled them up on sears website but I am not sure how many BTUs I need to cool a room . HELP if anyone has shopped around for one lately and can give me any advice I would appreciate it. Thanks
Are you talking about window unit air conditioners or central air conditioning units? I just purchased a window unit air conditioner for my son's bedroom in the house he lives in.
They are sized in BTU's; 5000 BTU's will cool a room about 150 square feet (10 feet by 15 feet) they go up from there; common sizes are 7500, 10,000 and 15,000 BTU's. If you have high ceilings, lots of windows, or lousy insulation, you may need to move up a size. Also, check the dimiensions of the case that hangs out the window, to make sure it will fit in the window you want.
Not good, as it will cool the room too quickly and then turn off or power back, resulting in no more dehumidification, the biggest factor in comfortable feeling. You need to have it large enough to cool the room or area, but not too quickly to have it power back before the dehumidification has taken place. If so, you wind up with a cold, but clammy feeling. Use something like Trib's link above, or this one from Consumer Reports.
