Air Canada luggage fees?

yes they charge for all checked bags, which cause people to bring on small suitcases as carryon which fills up the overhead bins so people who don't bring them can't use them.

I believe it's $25 for the first bag, and it gets more expensive after that. We have a party of 4, so we'll check a bag pp until we run out of "first bags", if that makes sense. No way I'm checking more than 4 bags! And I'll take the biggest pieces of luggage that will fit in without overweight/oversize.

They really don't want to be hauling luggage it seems. EastYorkDisneyFan, I hate the way that bungs up the cabin and slows down the process too.

$25 for the first bag and $35 for a second. Plus HST.

My packing has become leaner if I have to use Air Canada for flights to Orlando. Westjet does not charge for first bag and is my preferred airline. When you factor in the price differential for the bags, it is usually less expensive or very close to the same price. And they're nicer. But we often use points to fly so have to use AC and their bag charges.

If you check in online, there is a discount on checked bags, but I can't recall how much. Make sure you have your receipt at the airport.

Direct from the website for YYZ -> MCO on Air Canada:

$25 CAD/USD (per direction) 1st bag
$35 CAD/USD (per direction) 2nd bag
$100 CAD/USD (per direction) each additional bag
No overweight or oversize charges apply when the additional bag fee is paid.

Max. weight per bag: 23kg (50lb)
Max. linear dimensions per bag: 158 cm (62in)

We have it down to an art, for 5 of us, we take 1 suitcase and everyone has a back pack! that is all!

But when we go westjet (we try to more now!) it seems funny because I overpack and end up with both DH and I having our own suitcases. We are attempting to not do this on the next trip!

If you don't bring a carryon, why would you need to use them??

We are a family of three and have always done, and will continue to do, carryon only. It's way easier and free. I'd rather start my vacation right off the plane than have to wait for my bags at baggage claim or worry about some airline losing them - especially if I had to pay them to take them in the first place.

I don't carry on my luggage but I do like to have space for my coat, laptop or purse in the overhead bins. Also you have a situation where the adults outnumber the kids. We are breaking even, which is different and it's even more challenging when adults are outnumbered. This time we are taking our pet, which further complicates things. If one can travel carry on only and not fudge the bag size or gum up the aisles, great. However not everyone is in that position, and the airline restrictions on checked bags make it worse.

THIS! It's my two biggest peeves with air travel...people bringing "carry-on" bags that are obviously well over the size limit (and aircrew not enforcing the size limit) thus taking up more than their fair share of overhead space, and people who block the aisles much longer than they should need to, usually because they've brought "carry-on" bags that they can't actually carry (if you can't lift it to put it in the overhead, then it shouldn't count as a carry-on).

IMO, they should have the luggage policies reversed...checked bags should be free and you should have to pay for overhead bin-sized carry-ons. We normally travel carry-on only, and I'd happily pay the extra fee for the convenience, especially since boarding would likely be much faster without everyone fighting over space in the overheads...

I was on an international flight once that I think may have made a stop somewhere else before going onward. Anyway when I went to put my laptop in the overhead bin it was bull of what to me should have been checked in the cargo hold. I had checked two bags one that i had to pay an extra fee for because they said it was overweight, so I was already a little po'd at the airline to begin with. Iend up for the entire flight from Toronto to Germany with both my carry on bags at my feet
