I just bought a 2007 Hundai Sonanta. (Merry Christmas and happy birthday to me!) It has a "smart" airbag in the front that only comes on if the front passenger weighs enough.

I've looked through the owners manual and I can't find where it says how much a kid needs to weigh/how tall they need to be to ride in the front. Does anyone know? I have some tweeners that desperately want to ride up front but I want to make sure they are not in danger.

Oh, sorry I thought it was a thread about DW's (hehehe)

I would imagine that either their web site or a dealer could answer that! I would think that it would show a minimum weight that would "trigger" the airbag system.

I believe my Toyota manual said the sensor turns the bag on at 65 lbs, but I don't remember how tall. My car has a dashboard light that says when the passenger airbag is on/off and has a button to turn it off, if desired.

I do remember seeing a report that age is just as important as size when determining if a child should sit in front, because of the development of the neck and spine, and it recommended a child be 12-13 years old.

My Toyota Sienna has the same thing, and I think the weight is 80 lbs? There is a light on the radio that comes on if the airbag is turned off.

Have this same thing in my Ford Freestyle. I thought it was 80# too, but DD is no where near this and it will turn the airbag on when she is in the front seat. Had a loner Ford Edge for a couple of days recently and she could ride in the front in it no problem. I think each car is different. Good luck!

We have a Mazda MPV and the manual says 66lbs before the airbag will turn on but DS12 is about 70lbs and he doesn't turn it on (we have a light that goes on when the airbag is off).

Congrats on the new car!! :cool1:

I have a Ford Escape with the smart air bags too. I don't have a height/weight warning in my car, just a "must be 12 or older) warning. :confused3 I *think* that my manual says that the air bag doesn't come on unless the passenger weighs more than 100 pounds (I haven't looked in a long time). But, I know my 14 yr old weighs more than 100 pounds and the air bag off light is lit when he rides in the front seat.

HTH!

My mom's Rav-4 has a light that comes on when the passenger airbag is engaged. I think the weight requirement is 65 pounds, but I'm not sure. I weigh around 82 pounds, and sometimes it still doesn't come on. I've found that if you aren't sitting in the right spot, it doesn't acknowledge you.

Okay where is the freaking button? I have 2007 toyota camry and I cannot for the life of me find the button to turn off the airbag when my sister rides in front.

I have a 2006 Highlander Hybrid and it's on the dash below my radio, on the passenger side. It's a big round button with a light in it, hard to miss. Maybe Camrys don't have them. :confused3
