I have never flown before. I was wondering if there is a limit to how much luggage/what kinds of luggage you are allowed to take with you?? I figure there must be some rules or everyone would bring tons of stuff with them. Also, do you get charged perbag or whatever for the towncar service/shuttle services from the airport to Disney and back?

No you aren't charged additonal for luggage but you should tip additional if the driver helps with the bags.

Most US airlines allow two checked items per person, that are not to exceed 50lbs. You are also allowed one small carryon piece of luggage (a 20" rollaboard bag is allowed on almost every US carrier) and one personal item (purse, briefcase).

First rule of thumb--the more you try to carry on the better your chances of being searched.

Next rule of thumb--there's no reason that anyone needs more than a small tote bag and purse or SMALL laptop case, etc. as a carryon. (Certain exceptions for medical devices of course)

Another rule of thumb--If you can't manage to move around your own baggage, you're taking too much. Your going to WDW, not Mongolia. You can do laundry if you need to. You won't have freak snowstorms in the summer--I promise! Take one sundress for dinners in teh nicer places and the rest shorts and t's (assuming it's a summer trip) One pair dressier sandals, one pair sneakers, one pair casual but comfortable walking sandals. Wear the sneakers on the plane.

BTW--even if it were allowed, I still would'nt bring tons of stuff. Why? There's absolutely no need to. I bring exactly what I will need, no more, no less.

Most are 50#, SWA allows 70# per bag. Read the rules for your particular carrier on their website.

I totally agree with Ducklite here. IMHO, less is best.

Most airlines have had policies like this all along, but never enforced them. The carry-on restrictions will be enforced without question, due to security issues. You're also much more likely to be charged for overweight checked luggage, due to the airlines' bad financial shape.

All of your suggestions are great, but I wonder if the person that made the following list went on a plane.....haha

That's the kinda packing I do, especially since we are tight on $$ and if we fly down, we can't just take off and go to Publix. Also, when in general, folks advise to bring water, snacks, cameras, ponchos, etc. it can all add up..guess we might have to drive if we're gonna bring enough stuff for a week with us??

We have heard of cases where perfectly legally sized and weight luggage was not allowed to be carried on.

Never hand over a suitcase with valuables.

We recommend that if this happens, you immediately stop and remove valuables fromt he luggage, or get insurance immediately. Even if you ahve to miss the plane.

You can always bring a claim against the airline for a refund of extra fare if the airline broke their end of the baggage rules and you miss a flight, but it is much more difficult to make claims for lost valuables.

I noticed when we flew to Orlando last Friday that there were 3 or 4 suitcases that must have been close to the limit sitting at the end of the jetway tagged for gate check. I don't know if these people went over the 1 carryon per person limit or what.

sometimes if you are one of the last to board and all overhead bin space is taken a perfectly "legal" roll a boards can be denied boarding because they won't fit under the seat. The only other option is to gate check them. I have been tardy several times for a flight due to late meetings and had to gate check my bag. It has always arrived off the baggage carousel without a hitch with the rest of the plane's luggage. Don't be nervous about having to gate check items.

By the way, if your "legal" carry on is denied boarding due to the overheads being full and you don't get on the plane the airline good luck getting the claim paid for extra airfare. Some things are not worth the hassle. I always have valuables in my small bag or easy to pull out of my rollerboard. (I have been known to unzip it and pull out a PC before handing it over!) That has never been a problem and the luggage has always arrived.

I wouldn't carry most of that stuff if you paid me to do so. I do concede the need to put in some extra cooling gadgets in the summertime, such as the bandannas, which presumably are for wetting down and wearing for cooling purposes, but that list is the worst case of overkill I think I've ever seen.

However, I do strongly disagree with one of Ducklite's "don't need it" choices: kids soap & shampoo. Some kids can use hotel soap, but hotel soap is never "no-tears." Vacation is NOT the time to first try to use "stinging" soap. I once tried to use hotel soap for DS when he was 3: he managed to grab the soap and then swipe at his eyes before I could stop him. He screamed for 3 hrs. straight over that, and we had several angry people pounding on the door. (I do only carry one small bottle of chlorine-removing "no-tears" shampoo, and I just wash ALL of him with it.)

My rules for packing:
1. Put everything that your considering taking in a bag.
2. Then Dump everything on to the bed.
3. Pick up one thing at a time and say do I really need to take this.?Ask yourself will I really need 10 shades of lipstick to take with me? Am I going to need an industrial size of hairspray for a seven day Trip?
If, yes put it back in the bag. If, No, well thats one less thing to bring back isn't it.
4. Take only half the amount of clothing that you need. Plan on washing mid-week. Don't forget laundry soap tablets and fabric sheets.
5. Don't forget to pack a backpack or bag to bring back souviners. I prefer a draw-string back pack they are very light weight and will lay flat in your suit case and are the perfect carry-on on the flight back home.
Just a space saver I use ---- Go to the baby shampoo section at your grocery store. Johnsons and Johnsons has a bodybath/shampoo for kids. great space saver and every one can use it.

Just remember Keep It Simple

I wish I had read your packing hints before I went on my cruise -- I was prepared for any eventuality -- and packed three times what I needed. Hopefully, I have learned my lesson and can cut it down for my December trip to WDW

The list is pretty funny. I would recommend bug spray however, Florida does have killer mosquitos.

My suggestion is small sizes or sample sizes. And DON'T tell me you actually need a full size. Do you use an entire full size bottle of shampoo or hairspray in a week? If so, you can qualify for high manintenance person of the year! Otherwise buy samples or buy those small plastic bottles and transfer.

By the way, does anyone really wear sweatbands anymore?
