Ahh -- booked tent/pop-up and now getting a hybrid...

for Thanksgiving week!!!

Just completed our first year of being campers and we are ready to commit. Awesome -- what could be better than moving up from a tent and taking our new (not really new, but new to us) camper to FW for our 1st trip? Nothing -- until DH points out that a hybrid is larger than a pop-up and may not work on our Tent or Pop-Up Campsite!

Any help/advice would be so so greatly appreciated!

a) just stick to tent
b) bring hybrid and hope for the best

We saw a hybrid on the 2000 loop last year, so they obviously allow it, but it would depend on how big your new hybrid is. Our old pop up (A frame PUP) was 15 feet long and just judging from how it fit on the site, I'm sure we'd be able to get our new 26 footer on that same site.

The big thing, though, is the sewer hook up, or lack thereof. Fort Wilderness doesn't have a dump station, and their policy is to find an empty full hookup site to dump your sewer and gray water at. So if you plan to use your water system, you'll need to deal with trying to find an open spot and be cautious about filling up your black and gray tanks like you would when dry camping/boondocking. Or you could use the comfort stations and do dishes in a dish pan like you would when tenting.

ETA: I would call the Fort and explain your situation and see what they recommend. And I vote for taking the new hybrid if at all possible, I know I would want to play with our "new toy"!

Yep, totally agree with this. Take the hybrid and stay in the partial sites, I don't think you will have a problem with it fitting. You could try to change to a different class of site, (full hookup, preferred, premium) but since it's Thanksgiving, it might be difficult to do. Since you won't have sewer, just deal with the water situation the same way you would if you were camping and limit the use of the bathroom.

Others have reported (?) seeing motorhomes in the tent loops but I'm not sure about how reliable that info is. However, a hybrid would not be a problem but a MH, no way.

The only thing about calling FW is that if you call three times you will get three different answers. So I wouldn't even bother with calling.

You will be fine. Once you flip down those canvas bunk ends on the hybrid, you will feel like you belong in a Partial.

A hybrid trailer has the travel trailer core "box" with pop up type bunks that fold down from one or both ends (some models have bunks off the side). Here is an example:

The advantage is you can usually get a shorter and/or lighter trailer because the beds are not part of the body. You get the core trailer body which usually has a little more room, contends better in cold/wet weather, and usually a more deluxe kitchen and bathroom that what a pop up offers.

Some people (like me) think camping includes sleeping under canvas and a hybrid offers the best of both worlds. Others, though, want to leave pop up camping behind and go fully to a travel trailer which is all-enclosed. It's just an in-between style.

If your tow vehicle is more suited to pop-ups, then a hybrid with its main body is probably too heavy but like any trailer decision it's knowing the weights and numbers related to your vehicle.
