Awhile back we were trying to figure out which type of camper we were going to get. Once we found out you cant triple tow, our plans for which style didnt matter so we ended up with a 5th wheel(what we had b4). Here is my question. DH is going to build a rack on the back of the 5er for our gc. I know I read on here where some of you built your own and I was looking for the link so he could see it. I cant find it now. Do you all have any suggestion and recomendations for this task? What would you do or do differently??Thanks!!!

Lisa8200 (Mike) built a platform on his 5'er. He posted a while back and said it works good but he said the 5'er get's squirrly when he is on the interstate.

I am going thru the same thing and I'm looking at a swivelwheel trailer. It is basically a platform that you have to put receivers on your rear bumper area that it attaches to. If you have the hitch bolted or welded to the said receivers it becomes a leveling platform. go to swivelwheel.com and look at this product.

I dont know what size 5er you have but you need to check your pin weight. I bought a swivel wheel. Its a good idea but my 5er did not have enough pin weight so it would make my trailer whip out of control. There is another thread on here that stacktester started I even posted pictures of my swivel wheel on it. I had to add weight to the front of my trailer. Its a long story.

Isn't that swivelwheel trailer considered a triple tow setup if on the back of a 5er. The swivelwheel site calls it a trailer and it is towed:confused3 . Maybe somewhere in their site it clears this up, but I didn't see it when I glanced at the site.

It's kind of a gray area Larry. If it's hitched with pins it's considered a trailer. If it's bolted solid to the 5'er it's a weight distribution platform. The way Lone-Star has his done is legal. It's safer as well because it can't sway or jacknife. I spent a while on the phone today with Swivelwheel and the guy said battery carts need the 2 wheel type for weight distribution because of the batteries.

Lone-Star I may need to know the story on the pin weight. I thought by doing the swivelwheel that problem would be solved.

Thanks

Donnie, why not just have Ms Sundee gide your cart while you arent there and then get it when you get there ? it would be another good excuse to go to the Fort more :thumbsup2

I know you have enough truck to pull all of it :lmao:

Well I obviously don't understand the system since it looks like it's a solid connection via the receiver on the TV/Trailer and the plus is that is can't sway and backs like an extension on the TV/Trailer. IMHO if I were set on have to having a cart for FW I would just get a Dually PU, put the cart in the bed and get a bumper pull TT. That way you're not playing with the handling characteristics of a normal towed trailer/TV combo, just extra weight on the TV rear axle. I would think even the largest TT hitch weight will be under 1700 lbs and I don't know what a battery GC weighs, but a dually should handle that combo just fine, but I really don't know.

Puhlease Scott. You've got to be kidding me. I'm just gonna adopt Miss Sundee and then I'll just keep my cart at her place.

I'm sure I'll hear all the Scott this and Scott that the next time we roll in town. Yahoo has a barfing smiley face thingy. I wonder if I can copy and paste it to this forum.

I guess I better get a gas cart so I don't have to spend another grand on the double wheel. He says the batteries are located as to where the weight makes the swivel tire ride more to one side but a gas cart is different. I notice Lone-Star has a muffler on his cart for exhaust. Kinda different than the muffler Scott has for blowing smoke lol.

I have a small 5er 28' no slides dry weight is only 4,800 pounds. I just checked my book and my dry hitch weight or pin weight is 770 lbs. My golf cart is gas it weighs 700-800 lbs so its within the limits of the single wheel model witch I bought. I got it all hooked up put the golf cart on there took it for a test tow and it made me sway if I went over 50 mph or went around a curve. So I went back home and called swivel wheel. They said this had only happen to one other person but they had a small 5er well so do I. They said to add weight to the front of my trailer. So I Emptied my holding tanks because there behind the rear axle and filled my fresh water tank because its in front of the axle It helped but not enough. So I added 400 lbs to the top of my hitch (my hitch has been converted to a goose neck) which made it towable. I am still not completely happy with the way it tows but its safe at 65mph. I am going to do a spring over lift on my 5er to see if this helps distribute the weight better. My TV is a 4x4 F350 with 35" tall tires so my trailer dose not tow level I doubt this will help but I can do it in my drive way so why not. If that dose not make tow better then I will probably trade in my 5er and get a TT and just put the cart in the bed of the truck. We have been thinking of buying a new trailer anyway I just don't want another note.

If you got any more questions just let me know.

Before I bought mine I talked to the the owner of the company he has researched the triple tow law quit well and even gave me a pack of florida laws showing how its not a triple tow. There website says that they do not consider it a triple tow but some states might. I called the florida dmv and they did not know what to call it and said its a gray area in the law. Florida law states a trailer is a temporarily ball mounted device. So there are no balls on my swivel wheel and that is why I bolted it on instead of pining it.

So Lone-Star do you think I need the double wheel kind if I'm keeping my battery cart? I think the guy I talked to today was the owner. Very polite guy and helpful. Talked to one of his distributors at Discount Ramps in WI last week and wow, what an idiot. Sorry to have wasted his time lol. Guy knew nothing about the product so luckily I found the manufacturer and got some good answers. As a matter of fact, I told him he should advertise on this site or at least inquire. I've seen tons of inquiries in the last few months about people wanting to haul a golf cart behind a trailer. My axles are about center of the trailer but I would say a lot of weight is on the front. I have an empty garage in back and fresh tank. Black and Grays are forward of axles and from what I see, it's pretty heavy up front.

Donnie, I have just the answer for you. a 300hp diesel GOLFCART. It can pull the trailer.

From what they told me if you have a elec. cart you had to get the two wheeled model. I dont know how big your trailer is so its hard to say if you will have any problems. I doubt it though if its a toy hauler. I just wanted you to here my story so you wouldn't have any problems. But if you have a toy hauler aren't you going to have to unbolt the SW every time you want to get the toys out of the garage. I don't know if you have some one to help you when camping but 2 people makes it a lot easier to hook it up. That way one person can lift it while the other pushes the pin in the SW its self is pretty heavy. I never unhook mine so it doesn't really matter to me.

300 HP Cat Hell. My good friend TungPo is moving to my neck of the woods soon and I'm going to get him to build me a cart like the one he took to the fort. I can just drive it back and forth lol.

:thumbsup2 done deal I have a brand new 35hp Vanguard water cooled sitting in a box :woohoo:

Getting back to the OP's comments, if the golf cart was such a large consideration in the RV purchase (it is for us, too), why didn't you just get a toy hauler or a travel trailer? We have a TT but the golf cart fits nicely in the bed of my truck. Our next purchase is going to be a toy hauler but that's a little ways down the road.
