Afternoon Thunderstorms at MCO

Hi there- we have a flight from Philly to MCO, mid afternoon, at the end of June. We typically come down different parts of the year and/or fly earlier in the day. My question is- are there a lot of flights cancelled for these afternoon Florida storms? Wondering if this is something I should be concerned about and have a backup plan for. Thanks!!! :)

Agreed - weather issues could present a problem at most any time during the summer. The weather, along with other issues the airlines seem to be dealing with, delays and cancellations will happen. If you have a non-stop flight, that's better - less moving parts for you. If you have an afternoon flight, experience tells us that's less favorable than a morning - but you really don't know for sure.

100%. We have an afternoon flight with Delta this Saturday, which is Plan A. But we have Plan B (finding a nonstop flight on another airline for later in the day, which is dicey) and Plan C lined up (which involves hopping in the car and driving 19 hours, which is what we will do if we are not physically in the air by 10pm). It's very stressful to fly right now.

Mid afternoon TS are a fact of life in FL. Usually, not a long event. No worries.

we have sat in MCO terminal & on tarmac during storms but, planes were already on the ground there.

IMO it’s a good idea to always have a backup plan or two, even if just on paper/in your mind.

These days with limited crews it seems more of a problem. We flew home out of MCO in May, there were heavy storms, our plane was at the gate but we had to wait for the crew to fly in from elsewhere. Our 8 PM flight took off closer to 11 PM. It was the last SW flight of the night so we would have been looking for a room if it didn't go or if the crew had timed out.

That used to be true for sure. But airlines have recently been outright cancelling flights in areas impacted by inclement weather (instead of simply delaying them) to avoid cascading cancellations due to severe staffing shortages. And even with this approach, we've been seeing major disruptions across the country when storms impact one isolated region. For example, the days-long disaster in air transportation from last Thursday through Monday was ignited by isolated severe weather in New York and New Jersey. In the past, this wouldn't have caused such widespread chaos at airports across the nation. But increased demand for travel coupled with fewer pilots/flight attendants/gate attendants/baggage handlers/customer service phone reps/etc caused a tremendous ripple effect. With no real short-term solution on the table, this is likely to happen over and over again at least through the summer.

You are preaching to the choir. We fly often. I’m at the point where I now only book mid week flights to avoid the clusters that we’ve seen accelerate on the weekends.

None of my flights (16 of them) mid afternoon to evening since summer of ‘21; have taken off on time. There was usually a gate delay. However, we have gotten home the same day.

weather is a very convenient excuse for flight cancellations. Don’t have to offer compensation. It can truly exacerbate things. However, I’m fully convinced the real problem is the lack of pilots along with original over reaching flight schedules.

the massive rounds of preemptive, advance flight cancellations speaks to this. At least it gives customers a chance to make other plans in advance vs scrambling at the gate.

IMO the near daily, short afternoon TS in FL isn’t going to be a huge factor, vs this more serious issues the airlines are finally honestly acknowledging/addressing.

For those who want to minimize issues, the first flight out is typically your best bet as long as the airline in question has multiple flights heading out, even if connections.

Absolutely agree. When its because of "weather", the only thing they have to give you if your flight is cancelled is a refund (assuming that you don't want to be rebooked). No food or hotel vouchers. No compensation for nonrefundable vacations that you will be late for/won't be getting to at all. It's very convenient.

What i would think is if Orlando is getting the typical summer late afternoon storms is your flight in Philly gets delayed a bit to allow storms to pass and then your arrive a little late but still make it. There are lots of afternoon pop up storms this time of year here jn FL many last 60-90 minutes and disappear.
