Hi, we are planning to be in the area the 1st 2 weeks of August. Iknow, I know. I've been told that this is not a great time due to huge crowds at WDW and very hot an humid weather-starting to feel somewhat discouraged but we have no choice on travel date so have to go at that time. Will be the first time for our family.
My question is that I heard it is preferrable to return to hotel in afternoon for a much needed rest break-we plan to stay offsite from WDW. Is this do-able? I know to get our hands stamped before we leave but is the traffic OK and would we be allowed back if park is full?
Which would be closest and best location to stay in to cut down on travel time between hotel and WDW? Any recommendations for accomodations-we will be four-2adults and two kids 10 and 12.
Something with kitchenette or microwave and fridge would be great.
When is it a good time-not too late-to book?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Oh,my...please don't get discouraged! I've been several times in August. Yeah, it's hotter than---!!! But you've got the right idea. Plan rest times. It's absolutely unbearable for those people who insist that the Florida sun won't affect them and are determined to stick it out running everywhere all day. (Let me tell ya, they are not a pretty sight at the end of the day;) The Sheraton Vistana is a mile from Disney, two miles driving. Very convenient for skipping away from the parks and coming back--Yes, it is do-able. In fact, I highly recommend it. Since it's your first trip, make sure you plan your days to get the most out of the trip. An advantage you may not have thought of is this: in the summer months, Disney stays open later, so the days are longer, and you can afford to leave in the afternoon when it's very hot, take a break, swim, nap, relax, have lunch, and still come back around 4 or 5 and be at the park until 10 p.m. The disadvantage is that with a full kitchen, it's hard sometimes to get everyone out the door in the morning, because these condos are too comfortable.:teeth: Here's a website to view the Vistana.http://www.starwoodvacationownership.com/ There is also the Sheraton Vistana Villages, but they are on International Drive, also not very far away. Part of the fun of Disney is in the planning. Relax, and know you'll have a great vacation. We're all here to help you.

Afterthought: since it's only the four of you, have you considered staying onsite at the new Pop Century resort? The rates are quite reasonable ($77 night) and you could take advantage of Disney transportation. Or, splitting your stay between off Disney property and onsite, perhaps staying onsite for Disney parks, and offsite for other attractions in Orlando? However you do it, you'll still need the breaks. Don't forget: drink lots of water, wear sunhats and sunscreen.

thanks so much for your help and encouragement. Though I love the planning stage of this trip it definitely can be overwhelming and I just want to make sure that all goes well.
The kids don't even know-it's a surprise-so I hope all goes well and we can finalize plans. This board has been a wealth of information.

You're welcome. If you go on Expedia.com, click the hotel tab, and type in "Lake Buena Vista, FL" for the location, a list of hotels very close to DisneyWorld will pop up. The Sheraton Vistana Resort is found there, and may be available for the times you want in August. It is priced per night. Or, if you prefer, there are several other places also listed close by. I've stayed at the Vistana and it really is extremely convenient for the purposes of leaving the parks and returning. Feel free to e-mail me if you have more specific questions at disneyfool@comcast.net Happy planning!
