Weiny,
I saw the deck 8 flood you spoke of first hand. A HUGE mess. I was up on deck 10 forward taking some pictures of the moon over the water. I could smell what seemed to be an arc welder or acetelene torch. If I remember right, this was about 10:30-11:00pm. Walked down to deck 9 and the smell was coming from behind the tarps blocking access to the forward portion of deck 9. I assumed it was welding from the spa expansion. I decided it's time to head to bead and walked down the forward stairwell (starboard side). As I reach deck 8 I hear what sounds like Niagara falls coming from the portside hallway. I turned the corner to look and out of the ceiling in front of room 8500 was a downpour of water. Not just a trickle, but this was many GALLONS PER SECOND coming out of the ceiling. Even snapped a few pictures with my camera in hand.
Another gentleman and myself stood there looking at each other in complete disbelief. There was no one else around..not even a crew member. We grabbed the phone on the wall and advised of the situation. Several minutes later a couple crew members arrived and looked on in disbelief. By now the water in the hallway is almost 4 inches deep! People are starting to poke their heads out of their staterooms. The water in some staterooms was already 4-6 inches deep and they were scrambling to get things up off the floor. Every cabin from 8500-8514 seemed to be completely flooded with water 4-6 inches deep. People were coming out of their staterooms carrying pajama'd kids in their arms wading through the water. The first couple crewmembers showed up with buckets. Kind of a joke because even the 5 gallon buckets could have been filled in 2-3 seconds! In about 5 minutes 15 or so crew members were there. By then the water was flooding down the forward elevator shafts and could be seen coming out the doors of the deck 7 and 6 elevator doors. I went down to check on my room (deck 7 forward port side). A crew member came out of the center crew room across the hall(the one they use to elevator baggage up to the rooms) and I could see that deck 7 room was flooding as well. I went back up to deck 8 and there was a flurry of crewmembers with shop-vacs trying to suck up the water as fast as it was coming out. Don't know if the water came through the ceiling of any deck 7 starboard side cabins, but the deck 8 cabins looked trashed. The water finally slowed to a trickle but not before thousands of gallons had come out and flooded everything.
The next morning all the carpets outside rooms 8500-8514 had been torn out. I assume the room carpets were removed as well. Later that day they had the carpet installed again (don't know whether it was the old carpet or new but they got it done really quick). I talked to a construction worker later in the elevator and he said a water line was severed. Don't know if as a result of the torch I smelled or something else, but it was in the area of the fitness center expansion. He said something to the effect of "that's what you get when you let Italians build a ship. They should stick to gondolas". He further stated that several members of the renovation crew had been bunking in guest rooms and that they were moved out of their rooms and the residents of the flooded guestroom were relocated there. He said some of the construction workers would be sleeping in deck chairs for a few nights. He didn't elaborate on how it got severed and I was kind of taken aback by his statements as he walked out of the elevator.
I was impressed at how quick the crew got things looking back to normal. It still is frustrating that they commit to cruises and collect people's money when they know the ship is not and will not be ready. I commented on this in another thread before we left when I expressed frustration that the fitness facilities would not be available. Their idea of relocating it was to place 1 universal machine and some hand weights along-side the basketball courts on deck 10. Needless to say, the treadmills I had hoped for were not available in the fitness center or anywhere else for that matter. When I saw the water flooding out the first thing that went through my mind was "I guess that's another thing that didn't get fixed during drydock".
Overall we had a wonderful time on the cruise. I just will never again commit to a sailing within 2 cruises before or after a drydock. When I saw all that water coming out I had visions of the Titanic. Only reassuring thing was that the leak was coming from well above the water line

Oh well, lessons learned.
