affordable portable dvd player

We have one portable dvd player and DH just returned from a trip w/ 2 of our 4 kids and said they fought over it. Sooooooo, as of today, I'm in the market for another to take on our Sept trip with all 4 kids!

I could swear I saw them this past spring at target for $99 (??????)

In the 4th of July Kohl's ad that came in today's paper they had a Mintek 7" portable DVD player with carrying case, car adapter and two headphones advertised for $149.00 during the bonus hours of the sale (Firday July 1st 3pm-11pm and Saturday 7 or 8am till Noon). I have had my mintek since November and I have not had any issues.

I would highly recommend noise reducing headphones as well. They are not cheap (about $35 a pair), but they reduce the sound of cars and/or airplanes so the kids don't have to have the volume so high. If you can't afford them, consider headphones that are "over the ear". They also lock out the outside noise well.

Are the headphones plugged in to the DVD player or wireless? We have 3 pairs of the wireless headphones for our DVD player in the car. I want to get a portable DVD player for our Disney trip (plane and room) and wondered if the headphones we already have might work? If my headphones won't work, what could I do so all 3 could watch/listen to a movie?

Also, can you plug the DVD player into the TV's at WDW? Are they compatible?

Thanks!

WOW, based on my research, getting all of those added features with the player is a great deal! I'm going there this afternoon or evening! I love Kohl's. I'm there all the time. I wonder if I have any % off coupons laying around and if I'd be able to use them toward this.....Hmmmmmm..........can you tell I frequent the budget board?? :rotfl:
Thanks for posting this. I don't get the daily paper and would have missed this deal.

I have many friends that bought their kids DVD players before we bought ours. One of their biggest problems was that if you get the ones that hang over the front seat, and the dvd part (not the screen) hangs down below the screen, the kids can easily kick it with their feet. Sometimes it just caused the dvd to turn off or skip, but I have had a few friends who have actually had to replace theirs because of this! :earseek:

So....when we bought ours, we found one at RadioShack that actually has the screen swivel, and the part where the dvd is put into is actually able to fold up behind the screen when it is mounted to the front headrest. This was great because then all my daughter saw was the screen, and she couldn't kick that high to ruin it. It comes with a remote that can easily be used from the front seat, so there is no need to access the dvd controls once it's in and behind the screen. (I'm hoping this is making sense!) I believe that the one we have is made by Polariod also, and at the time we bought it (last Christmas) it was the only brand that did this. It was a little pricer (about 300 when we bought it) but I know it's come down since then and they are about 250.00 and have a mail in rebate, also. Just a thought. We opted for spending a bit more so we wouldn't have to replace it so soon from cronic kicking!

The picture and sound are great, and it comes with duel headphones. There is also a charger that comes with it, so it doesn't have to run on battery alone. You just plug it into the car charger, and have continuous play! If I can find a link, I'll post it here.

Good luck in whatever you decide. It's sad that I stimulate my dd w/ tv while we are in the car, but our in-laws live about 1 1/2 hours away (a solid 2 with Chicago traffic!) so this has saved us many times from a crabby road trip! :cheer2: :Pinkbounc

This week DH came home from a trip to Key Largo (from NJ) and he said the DVD player is "worth it's weight in gold". A 13 yo and a 16 yo shared a backseat w/o one, single fight/argument!!

I just got back! I was at Kohl's at 3:11pm....they hadn't even put the DVD players out yet, had to get one from the back for me! LOL

Anyway, thanks again scoutsmom! This is a great deal and I hope you don't mind I'm going to post it on the Budget Board too. The regular price for this unit is $229!

I used a 15% off coupon so saved an additional $22 off of the promo price of $149! Then inside the box were coupons for 10 FREE dvd rentals. They all expire on 7/31/05 so I guess we'll be watching a lot of movies this month!

So happy!

Edited to say: I tried several times to post this on the BB and kept getting the "This is a duplicate of a thread that you posted less than 5 minutes ago." It wasn't, but that is what the message said!

Well, I did alot of research before I bought mine. I finally settled on the one at Wal-mart. It was $248.00. But for that, it had two 7inch screens, rechargable battery, car case, wall plug, car plug, and while one person is watching a dvd the other person can be playing a video game on the other screen. It was really the best value for all the things you get.

Do you know how many headphone jacks this has? I would need three!
My local walmart doesn't ever seem to have this in stock so I'd have to order online. Can't really see all the info online.

Thanks,
Kimba

Any of them are quite good. Only 3 manufacturers make all of the portable DVD's. No matter what you pick, they should work fine.

I like Costco for my electronics. I bought a Toshiba there and it lasted 7 years with my son (who is 9 now). That's durable.

I put it on layaway. My kids are earning the money for it. If they want they can buy it. Actually we are helping because we are using our change jar for this.

Anyway - it has FOUR head phone jacks!!! Awesome! :cool1:

HI there! Thanks for posting this deal -- i went and got one too! :)

Just one question for anyone who has this Mintek player -- we tried it out and the picture and sound were very good, the headphone sound quality is great. BUT -- the actual disc spinning in the player rattles and makes a lot of noise. You can't notice it if you have the headphones on but you sure can hear it when you don't!

I don't have any experience with the portable players, so I'm wondering if this is normal? Or should I go and try to exchange it?

Thanks!
Courtney

I have the cutest Disney portable DVD player. It is only a 3.5 inch screen but it has Mickey Mouse in black and white all over. I liked it because it does not flip open. It is around $120 and I bought it at Target. I also saw a Power Ranger themed portable DVD player a few weeks ago at Once upon a Toy store at DTD.

We just got the Mintek at Kohl's and it doesn't make that noise. I would exchange it.

Our local Fry's store had this DUAL 7" screen DVD player for $199 (refurb). Works GREAT!

It is normally $299 but they have been running the $199 specials every couple of weeks

We've used it to drive to Disney, and up to NJ from Georgia. The Dual screens are great....and they can either display the same thing, or one can be playing the DVD while the other has a Video game connected (or both can have different video games attached.)

THANKS... I went back today and got another one. It works great, no noise at all!

Hooray! :cheer2:

I bought mine from Walmart, but they have them at costo and they have everything from two headsets to the carrier. All under $175.00.

I just got this one for our latest car trip. There are 2 headphone jacks for each screen. If you need more jacks, you can buy a splitter that will give you an extra jack, or two splitters will give your 4. We hooked DS's X-Box up to the extra screen and he played that while the twins watched movies (it also came with a game controller with a 25 build in games, nothing fancy, but the kids like them). It is WELL worth the extra money for the second screen. We are using the DVD player in our bedroom when we don't travel with it.
