Just starting the packing for lift off on Saturday and am confused by the advice Virgin give. I have always packed aerosols in hand luggage incase they explode in the hold and now Virgin are saying they are banned from hand luggage. Am I right in thinking that the aircraft holds are now pressurized and can cope with aerosols or is it still risky??
Thanks for any reply so that I can finish the packing.
Claire :)

I've always put my aerosols into my hold luggage.

I would have thought that the aircraft holds are at the same pressure as the cabin (or live cargo wouldn't survive!).

Last August I was asked to put them in my suitcase by Virgin. I think they see them as a security risk in hand luggage.

Hi Claire,

BAA security advice (from their website) is to pack all aerosols in CHECKED bags.

The hold is pressurised, but not to an extent that would make it dangerous to deoderant cans.

However, when animals are to be carried in the hold, the captain is informed and he reduces the pressure and turns the heating on (that's why airlines need to know if your carrying animals well in advance).

I hope that helps,

Lewis

....unless the animals are penguins :)

Hi

I don't know how accurate this is, but I was told by a check in agent once that if aerosols are brand new then you should spray them first before you put them in checked luggage.

Like I said, not sure if this is true but I always do it now anyway!

LOL to your reply Goofyish.
So it looks like the aerosols will be going in the suitcase. Got all the clothes etc in them now just counting the hours down now!!!

Have just come back fom holiday with Virgin and there was no mention of aerosols at all so as usual I packed them in the hand luggage and nothing was said either way. The only thing that was said was that film rolls should be packed in hand luggage as the x-rays over in the states are stronger than here on checked in luggage.
